[JustinTV] SWTOR Beta gameplay footage - Page 9

I couldn't care less that it's WoW reminding. It's Star Wars. I think I would have to be dead to not get this on release.

The movements seem much smoother than in previous videos.

give me an example.

the problem i see with replacing the grind (which im ALL FOR, i am not saying i like "kill 16 gremlins" quests/missions) is that in order to have enough so that people can keep doing it until they get that rare drop, it's going to require an enormous amount of effort on the devs part.

otherwise people will be just re-running the same mission over and over which is equivalent to grinding. look at city of heroes, it has missions and a story; but it is essentially still just grinding.

come to think of it CoH is probably the closest you can get away from the classic grind while still not breaking the kill kill kill in hopes of getting something good model of a MMO. The only thing is, since missions are all instanced the world doesn't feel as populated as a fully open world everyone shares.

Watch about 3m earlier in the video as to why, and then remember that the raider wasn't trained to use a lightsaber.

Look at the time stamp. It lasts from 1 to 2:30 am on a test server, and there are 17 announce planets. There wasn't anyone else on the planet, no one responded to him in general chat the few times he tried.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, and I'm sure plenty of people will love it for those reasons, and honestly, I will probably end up grabbing a copy and playing for a while. But at the end of the day I am tired of the conventions that mire these games. It looks like the same tired thing in a new suit. Look too closely, and the illusion will break down.
Bioware said as much, they arent trying to reinvent the wheel, they are just taking a formula that works and improving on it, much like Rift has done (especially AoE looting =D).

Honestly, i agree with you that the genre has become a bit stale, with company after company copying the same basic, but not exact, formula for their games. I look at Guild Wars 2, and that game looks like it will be a ton of fun, as it is almost entirly different from what the 'basic' formula is, and i will enjoy playing it when it comes out too.

as for a release date for the game, if they dont announce it at this years E3, one of the biggest press event for video games in the world, then i will give up hope of it coming out anytime this year =(

Besides, at its worst, TOR will be 8 epic singleplayer KOTOR games, and that wouldnt be to bad either.

I've been on the Rift 7 day trial and it's so much more polished than WoW. Been playing it more than I should be lol. SWTOR has taken a step further than Rift! I can't wait for this mmo! I remember the slow agonizing death of SWG but SWTOR is going to rekindle that Star Wars fun for me once again!

The one thing Bioware has going for them is that this will release much earlier than GW2. If this game came out after, I have a feeling it wouldn't do nearly as good.

Same situation with BF3 and MW3.

The majority of the people that play this will most likely either be die-hard Star Wars fans, or WoW/Rift dropouts looking for their next fix.

I'll give you that. KOTOR was one of my top ten gaming experiences. Maybe even top five.

MMO's should be just like real life as far as the grind goes. Here's an example:

You can wakeboard now, and you're okay, you can have a good time at it.

But if you REALLY want to be the best, not only do you have to have talent, but you have to spend hours and hours 'grinding' your skill up to be the best.

That's the way I see it. Back in BC in wow, normal guilds could have fun on T4/5 content and that was cool for them, my guild was 'grinding' shadow resist gear for Mother to complete all the T6 content available then. I have to emphasize how much that did NOT suck, in fact that was part of the reward of playing the game and what kept me paying $15/mo for it. I think where MMO's fail is they either force players casual players to grind or don't let a hardcore following develop because there is no grind, wow did it right.

I agree. People enjoy grinding if they get something unique and rare out of it. For example, let's say there's a rare pet in a game. You can either have people do a great 2-hour quest-line that contains amazing cut-scenes and an enjoyable storyline, or have people grind on dragons that have a .01% chance of dropping it. Of course you can say "people will much prefer the storyline to nonstop grinding!". But, people want to prove they can work for the item, and the "hardcore" will cherish a chance to get something rare that less-dedicated players can only dream of. After all, if everyone gets the item, no one cares about it any longer.

That's a very loose and vague analogy for it, but it's the basic idea of why grinds can be necessary. That, and the fact that making an MMO without any grinding is virtually impossible. WoW was praised when it was released for not forcing players to consistently kill mobs to gain XP, instead letting them quest all the way to max level. Of course, those "quests" are just grinds with poor stories attached, but it was a big step in the right direction. The expansions improved it even more by offering fun unique quests in midst of all the generic kill x mobs. The idea that you can feasibly have hundreds of hours of game-play without any grinding is ludicrous.
