"this version of windows could not be installed..."

Thread Starter
I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and I decided I would like to upgrade to 64bit. So I ran the installation (let's say I purchased the ISO off the website and mounted it). I chose a Custom Installation (like a clean install, I think) and it started to get to work. It got through all the stages then it got the part where the PC restarts itself. When it came back on it said the installation couldn't complete or something similar. It started to revert back to normal. Then when it logged in it came up with the message : "This version of windows could not be installed" and some other stuff.

Why is this? I don't see why it wouldn't work and it's frustrating me :S All help appreciated.

When doing the clean install, did you erase all of the old partitions first and start with a fresh block of unpartitioned?

Sanctum has a Xeon so I hope it'd be 64 bit

EDIT: Looks like Sanctum has this workstation, which has a quad core Xeon in it.

Um, I don't think so. I don't know how :S Although, the post I've quoted below may be the problem.

I think that's exactly the same EXCEPT mine has two processors, each with 1 core.

If you don't need any data on the drives, wiping the drives is the way to go. During the installation, before it actually begins you get to choose the drive to install to. Click the advanced button in the options at the bottom and click each partition on the disk you want and hit delete on every one of them, until you are left with only 1 piece of unpartitioned. Be careful if there is more than 1 drive in the computer that you only clear the one you want.

If it was not a 64-bit capable CPU, you wouldn't have even reached the installation because the disc checks beforehand and will tell you of an architecture compatibility problem.

Thanks a lot for your post, I'll give it a go. I have two hard drives - one's my slave drive, used for storage and the other is my main drive, with my OS on. I assume I only have to delete the partitions on the main drive?

Ah okay, thanks - I guess that solves the worry about it being 64bit

What if you only have one partition?
