How are Toshiba Notebooks?

Thread Starter
Thinking of getting this notebook here

Just wondering what the build quality is like? I know there's a review on there saying it feels cheap, but for that price and a CPU like that I think it's pretty good value for money.

What do you guys think?

My girlfriend has one, it is awful but she loves it.

The trackpad has broken once on it and the keyboard flexes more than the keys move.

Judging by your current system, you don't like cheap tacky crap things, I wouldn't get it.

If any of the older Toshibas are any indication, they are a surely below a Dell but above an Acer in build quality. I used to work on a lot of them but mostly it is now HPs and Dells since they have a much bigger market with my customers.

They use way too much cheap plastic and the components are often a pain to get to. With Dell and HP you can often swap out things like a keyboard or screen without much issue, but on most Toshiba you have to take the entire thing apart for the simplest things. Forget about doing a system fan without needing to pull the motherboard. At least I don't think they solder the CMOS batteries to the board like some other people do. I hate that crap.

Again, I never worked with this particular model, I am just giving my view of my past experiences with Toshiba.

I don't know if it is just me, but I beat the hell out of all my laptops, except one, when I used a dell latitude I was in love, it felt like metal. I doubt it was a cheap latitude though, it was flat black with pointy corners, it was all curvy and crap.

Also if you have the opportunity, go to your pc store and play with it, squeeze the edges, push screen back and fourth, ect.

What ever you decide to buy, make sure you read some reviews on it, and for toshibas, make sure there are no bios problems, because I have a toshiba that I cannot reinstall windows 7 on (a lot of reports of the same thing, so I just run ubuntu on it)

I'm pretty sure I can fix that. I love a challenge. I have a repair business here in Philly. We may not be cheap, but there is nothing that cannot be fixed.

And after 5 years in the business I have yet to be proven wrong on that.

Pretty sure most people can talk you through how to troubleshoot that issue for free, after all that's what these forums are for

I actually am I fixer myself, I don't pay for my laptops, I get them for free broken, but that particular laptop is just crazy. The bios was apparently made my a 12 year old, it would give crazy errors like booting off of an audio device, and stuff like that.
I could not for the life of me get windows 7 to install, it would lock up during the "testing comp hard ware or what ever" , I tried all of these debug mode installs and everything. I tried installing via cd, and usb.
Right now I am just running ubuntu on it, which is perfectly fine for a low end laptop anyways (no games)

Also, 5 years in business isn't that long, I am 17 and I have been fixing laptops and doing minor soldering repairs for 3

I don't believe I am that much of a noob -_-, I know my way around windows and linux, but some things are just not worth the effort. (I would probably need to read up on making custum windows installs for select hard ware, because that seemed to be one of the problems, windows 7 just didn't like the hardware, and the hardware didn't like the drivers it was trying to load for setup)

To the OP, the laptop that I used had the same design as this one

Oh I have been messing with computers for over 20 years. I only went into business for myself 5 years ago. Before that I worked for a local shop here in Philly. This is my hobby, but it also pays both mortgages, car payments, kid's tuition, etc. I don't make a ton of money, but I really love what I do.
