Custom Built PSU?

Thread Starter
Hello all. Currently, I'm helping build a new PC for a friend. I presumed that a quality 750W would be enough for a 2500k build with 460s on SLI as well as a 4.0GHZ CPU OC. I suggested to my friend that he get the XFX 750W Black Edition, but while he was looking it up at work, a coworker saw him shopping for parts and told him that he'd build him a PSU in a week for much cheaper than purchasing a new one, and that he used to work for some PSU manufacturing company. My friend thought he was joking but lo and behold the next week he got a shiny new PSU, and according to the guy it's 600W under full load.

However, I'm skeptical about the efficiency nor do I know any of its specifications besides the # 600W. Is there anyway I can test it or if some of the parts can be identified if I open it up? The PSU case appears to be an OEM case from OCZ, with an OCZ fan, otherwise . According to my friend the dude only charged him $40 as well as a personal guarantee that he'll fix/pay for anything that goes wrong with the CPU or if there needs to be other wires/etc.

If the local PSU Guru or any of the local experienced members can take a look and give some advice on what to do (or at least how to test it?), I would greatly appreciate it.

P.S. I wouldn't mind if you guys give me a more accurate min wattage supply that I should get for my friend either haha.

"Used to work for" sounds a bit questionable...like why isn't he still lol.

I can't say much about testing personally, you can find voltage meters online, someone else will point out a good one I'm sure. Still though, I dunno if I'd trust my brand new system to some random PSU builder.

Personally I'd still just go for one of the prebuilts recommended here:

Judging by what you've said, the unit sounds like an OCZ, and his friend sounds like a liar.

A quality 600/650W would be more than enough.

He could have gotten a decent real PSU for just over $40. I got my ModXstream Pro for $54, and its 700w 80 plus certified.

I wouldn't trust any home made PSU, not worth the risk.
