Going from three 580's to a 590 isn't that much of a downgrade. If he wants raw speed, get him a 2600k build. He doesn't need anything over a 550 Ti if he just wants an instantaneous experience. He needs fast and tightly-timed RAM, solid-state drives and a streamlined OS, free of clutter.

The OCZ Revo PCIe card is RAID 0 AFAIK.

as is the ibis which is actually faster than the revos asfik, the ibis drives are about twice as fast because they are a hardware raid of four drives as opposed to two in the revo.

the problem with both the revo drives and the ibis is their lack of trim support, which essentially means there will be a steady degradation in performance over the life of the drive. you would be much better served by buying a large capacity, sata III drive that hits close to the top of that spectrum (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227708).

just saying, if I were spending 10k plus I would be pretty frustrated when it started to degrade.

They supposedly have something that does the same trim built in.

Fermi cards get poor viewport performance in 3D productivity applications, better to look at ATI cards if he does anything like that, with maybe a Cuda card that's just for Cuda/GPGPU tasks. This is assuming that he actually does anything productive with it. If this is just an Internet machine, there's little reason to even bother with this sort of thing; just throwing money down a rat hole. Get something cool and quiet for video.

SSDs can swallow a budget fast... if he's really not doing any gaming, CAD, or crunching, there is no point in some crazy video card set up. Any mid-range card is more than enough. Put the money into the CPU + memory/SSDs instead.

I would get a normal SSD to boot from, and that PCI for storage. Or a raided SSD array for storage.

If he wants things as fast as possible, he won't like the wait for the Raid array to load while booting the system.

Also, no a 360 won't handle all 3 gpus and 990x. You're going to need more rad than that.

I am also on the same boat as don't go 3x580s, simply because there is more room for issue. He is expecting absolutely no hiccups for that price. No need to mess with SLI drivers .
It is bootable, I'm running off one now.

Its 4 60GB hdd's in Raid 0 with their own raid controller.

They're very, very fast, and very easy to set-up. I'll do a guide if you need one.

Heres specs of it un-tweaked/fresh install:

Best drive I've ever used by far...
