Thoughts on the E760 classified board?

Reviews seem decent, thinking of picking one of the ones up in for sale. My main criteria are in order of priority would be:

1. overclockability - the power delivery seems decent from reviews
2. 3 way SLI + 4th slot for raid card
3. Not terrible onboard audio

Any problems with them? Newegg reviews seem to say they're hit and miss reliability wise.

Would you pay extra to get a x58a-OC or an open box R3E?

Cool thanks, gotta love franklin btw.

FWIW this is mainly for water, maybe later once 2011 comes out I'll play on this with dice/ln2/phase but it's not in the immediate future and that will be more for learning than for records.

I'm just getting rid of mine after two years -- not because it's a bad board (quite the contrary) but because I wanted a change after upgrading to a Gulftown. I have the supposedly rare E761 model, which is basically an E760 with the OC tweaker daughter-board that came with the original limited edition 759s.

It's been a great board overall. It played great with my 920 D0 (OC'd up to 4.2ghz under water) and works well with the 990x (although OCing that isn't a challenge.) Very solid and very stable, even with all RAM slots filled (which is how I've ran and OC'd it since day-1.) I've always had the CPUs under water, but never went further than that (i.e. no LN2.) Never bothered to cool the MCH, as it never gets too warm to take notice.

Never played with the on-board audio. It's your standard-fare RealTec, so yeah... not terrible. It's probably the same as what you already have. As for a 3-Way SLI setup plus a PCI-E RAID card -- it indeed can be done. If the RAID card is PCI, you'll run into trouble (unless the video cards are or can be modded single slot.)

For the first half of X58's life-cycle, this was the board to beat. The ASUS Rampage III Extreme has sort of taken its spot as it's newer and has USB3 and SATA-6, but otherwise they're more or less comparable. Note that soon after the production of the E760 and the behemoth SR2, much of the EVGA motherboard team jumped ship to Sapphire, which is why, so I'm told, the updated E760 (The Classified 3 / E770) hasn't fared too well (it's also very hard to find.) Good news is that EVGA support hasn't declined, and after a brief hiatus, BIOS updates are being pumped out on a regular basis.

All in all I can highly recommend it. I'll also be selling mine very soon.

They have a problem with melting 24pin connectors. I would say no.

Wow thanks Yipster that's a very informative answer, +rep! My raid card is pci-express, but i'll be running waterblocks so I should be able to fit it in the last slot.

GIPrice - thanks for the heads up on that I googled that and found this thread: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m...e=1&print=true

From a quick read it seems to suggest it might be more of a problem for multi rail supplies. My current board doesn't have extra power for the pci-express so I wonder if therefore I'll be ok? However it would be nice to pick up some tri 480's at some point and that could cause more problems so it would be good to avoid this happening. Ideally though maybe I shouldn't change it for an e760 and instead just pay up and get the x58a-oc or an R3E then. I was hoping to find a 2nd hand board for cheap with a waterblock, but 99% of the R3E's are bare.

Yeah but for that price I'd favor the x58a-oc. There's an e770 with block for sale in the for sale forum but the price is higher than I'd like for a 2nd hand board.

The other thing that's nice about the x58a-oc are the switches to turn off certain pci-express cards, I wonder if I wire that up to a switch on the case, so that I save power by only running 1 gpu card in linux rather than 3

Imo the X58a-oc is not a board for the average user or gamer. It was purely designed for dry ice and ln2. Buying one for the sole purpose of air / water would be wasting its talents. Gigabyte has the UD9, UD7, and the G1 series for the average extreme gamer that will fulfill anyones needs better.

You should only get the OC if you want to use LN2, other wise you are wasting money.
