Oc with ram ?

Thread Starter
I'm still really kind of new to oc anf had a question about ram and oc'ing. On my sid system would it hurt oc performance to run 24gb of ram. If it does what is the ideal. I just want to get the right amount with running triple channel. Cause I know that 24gb of ram is crazy but my ram is sold in 2x4gb packs. Thanks.

only the computer store wins

I read that you can run triple with four sticks. Will the tree sticks run triple and the fourth single? And what kind of performance with that setup?

with 4 sticks you are running dual channel
dual is more then enough bandwith

Thanks for the help. I think I'm just going to run 12gb with the fourth stick as backup or as needed.

You have to check with the motherboard, some run the first three in triple channel and the fourth as single (from what I've heard - doesn't make sense to me). I'd just stick with 3 sticks, unless you know you need lots of memory 12gb is plenty.

The reason 12gb (3x4gb) can be faster than 24gb is that memory speed is often limited by the memory controller on the cpu, running 3 sticks is less capacitance on the memory bus than 6 sticks so it's easier for the cpu to drive. This of course only applies if you buy fast enough ram. If you buy slow ram 24 gb will be as fast.

Thanks for the explanation. that is exactly what I wanted to know. I will run 12 with the 4gb stick as a backup, just in case one stick goes down, or need to diag my ram.
