6970 overclock memory issue

Thread Starter
So im running my 6970 overclocked.
The Core is running at 1Ghz. on 1250mV
Temps are very good, 45Load max (on ek fc-6970v2 waterblock)
so here comes the problem, i've tried overclocking the memory to 1450, but as soon as i play a game, take for example worlf of warcraft, as i have expierenced the issue there.
stable : core 1ghz, mem 1,4Ghz @ 1250mV
unstable Core 1Ghz, mem 1.45Ghz @ 1250mV.

i dont have anything set in ccc all is done in MSI afterburner.
so should i enable the setting in ccc for the power control ( to +20%)
or aint that gonna help me here ?

btw the problem is : when i set the memory to 1450 and i play a game (WoW) it just hangs, stuck, cant do anything until i press the reset button.

I RMA'ed my 6970 Lightning for the same reason. I could go 980/1475 with 10% power slider added and pass heaven and furmark, play 15 min of Bad Co and crash.

It got so bad it would lock on stock settings.

Hope the new card performs better, looks like your 1000/1400 at 1.25 is your max.

There is no reason not to enable power control all the way, as the only thing it can do is allow the card to use more power (I used to set mine to -20% to save power, but people explained to me that it uses what it uses, it just downclocks if it hits the max power consumption allowed by the power limit)

It's probably just an unstable overclock.. You're bound to hit a limit some time. What is your goal overclock?

I dunno if the new card fixed it or not (I guess it did because you're still listing that card in your setup), but the BFBC2 issue could just be that stupid afterburner/punkbuster issue. I've been ready to tear my hair out for weeks because sometimes it crashes 15 minutes in, sometimes it doesn't crash at all. Argh.

I didn't remove the Lightning in my sig but I am running the 5770 now. The RMA is due back to me this week. I have gamed with this card since monday and no crash with Afterburner on using the screenshot and record function so it was completely card related. No change in drivers either, had to be the card.

It's not unusual to get poor memory on 6970s. It's kinda ironic considering the amount of fear mongering over 6950s flashed to 6970, when the 6950 typically can hit max 6970 memory speeds with ease, and real 6970s often have problems achieving the same. OP, I'd assume your memory cannot handle the overclock. There are no guarantees it will hit the clocks you desire.

My Goal overclock was just 1Ghz on core, so Im proud of what i've reached on it, but i always want more power. but in the end 1Ghz core and 1400Mhz memory is fine for me smile.gif.

Thanks guys for the tips, im just gonna keep it this way then.

Memory is definitely the limiting factor on my lightning. I could do 1500 stable on stock volts on the sapphire 2nd gen ref blue pcb 6970 I had. Now, I have to add voltage on the lightning to get above 1400. It seems strange, but those are the breaks. The HardOCP review of the card showed the same. Those extra memory power phases in the lightning really don't amount to a hill of beans if the memory itself isn't up to snuff. However, from what I've heard (haven't tested yet), you get better gains from core clocks than memory clocks. You can't really call a card defective for not clocking much higher on memory. It's definitely not worth paying 15% restocking after I already did that for the Sapphire because I didn't like the noise....
