Question on a Old HDD

**** First I want to make sure that everybody will not give bad comments such like '' Is overclock(dot)net not old-thing.net '' or so please be understanding, that is only a question. Thanks***

Hi Everyone, it might sound awkward but you may need some skills in Vintage computing. I was helping my grand father to clean his basement today, and I've found a box full of old computer pieces. There was an interesting HDD (Kalok Octagon KL 330) that thing is HUGE!!!!! But the thing is I don't even know how this thing work there is like a controller with 2 ribbon cables on PCI ISA.
For testing i was using some old junk (but working):

-MSI MS-6163 Motherboard ( ISA for the HDD controller)
-Cirius Logic .... 2 MB PCI VGA card
-Pentium 3 @ 300mhZ
-100W PSU
-640 MB of Ram
-Western Digital WX3-R HDD Controller ( ISA )
-Kalok Octagon KL330
- 20 GB Scrap HDD (in case)
- Scrap Cd Player

Case 1:
If i Only have the old hdd on the controller (no cd, no 20gb) the machine finish by saying PRESS A KEY TO RESTART

Case 2:
If the Cd is plugged in ( Secondary Master ) the computer is trying to boot from the Cd

Case 3:
I've founded a cable with the same big connector on my old HDD who plug on the floppy connector, but there is no Plug and Play for that...

Case 4: Everything is plugged in... It's trying to boot on Windows ( 20Gb HDD)but there is no windows on it ( format from long time ago...)

So anyway if anybody can help me to get that old baby working back ( and see how much noisy it can be while working , I Would really appreciate that!!!!

I had some idea for it too...ÀI don't know if they are good but...
1. format the 20gb's HDD with windows XP and see what is going to happen
or
2. format Mr. 20gb with something older than windows xp but i suppose that I might have some problems finding drivers for it....

Thanks and sorry for my English (hope everyone understand)

Hi Le Pick,

That is a very, very old hard drive! We are talking 1989 or so.

Most likely, you have an XT controller, not an AT controller. It's been a very long time since I did any of this stuff but I think you will have trouble accessing the drive using an XT controller if your machine has HDD access BIOS extensions, because they mask access to the on-controller BIOS.

And your machine will have those extensions, because they came in with the 286. You *can* use an XT controller with an AT board - I know because I've done it, years ago - but it's tricky, and after all these years, I can't remember the details.

Ahh - I checked: yes, the Western Digital WX3-R is an XT controller.

DO NOT try to use the floppy connector. It is completely different. You must use the twin cables and the MFM controller. (Technically, and RLL controller in this example, but let's not go there.)

You shouldn't need any sort of driver software, just DOS. (Yes, DOS will be much easier than any Windows version for this.)

That is a very old little hard drive, so be sure to look after it even if you can't get it working. Good luck!
