And intel is pretty much the only option if you want a high end cpu. The Phenom IIs are great (had one until 2 weeks ago), but until bulldozer arrives AMD wont have a cpu that can compete with the 2500k/2600k.

Back on topic, I've done some more reading and I think I might go with the x2 555. Any objections? Would the x4 640 be a better option for $5 more?
I know you need a GPU for the other tasks you plan to use the rig for, but that won't stop you from testing a minecraft server when you get the rig, will it?

I admit that I haven't been keeping up to date on current tech, but even if Intel CPU's wipe the floor with AMD, I'll never buy another Intel CPU. However, this is your rig, and not mine, so if you want Intel, go for it.

For a server, the more cores, the better AFAIK. Especially if you want to multi-task.

Take the quadcore, You can run different things at the same time.
I had a quadcore server for a while, ran 2x CS 1.6 Servers, a garrys mod server and was also a webserver. Ran fine with 8Gb RAM and VM's

Don't worry I'll definitely test it. I find messing around with low end tech fun anyway.

Though if I find that its not enough I'll have a CPU lying around I'll be compelled to do something with it... like sending it on a suicide run and blow it up lol.

So you guys are sure that the quad Athlon will beat the dual phenom for MC server work? Do only other thing I'll be doing with it at the same tim as I'm hosting would be streaming stuff over the network, and playing MC off it when I need to test mods etc.
