Note that 4x4gb isnt quad-channel. its 2x dual channel.
They say quad channel kits purely for marketing reason.

on top of that 2x4GB is really enough
i only use 4GB and never top over 75% useage.

Great choice on the soundcard
Its one of the best for playing music at this pricepoint.
I heard that there are better ones for gaming though.

A good cpu cooler is really advised for you since you have a 2600K your bound to OC it
A Thermaltake silver arrow is a really good one but it might not fit with your selected RAM.
Prolimatech Megahalems is a good cooler and i am almost a 100% sure it will fit with your board and RAM choice. it doesnt come with fans though, you can fit 2 max.

2) tri fire on that board would also only give you a single pci slot open as nearly all gpu's now days use duel slots. so that means ether choose a pci wireless adapter or pci soundcard.
Very good, i overlooked that

On the wireless thing...
If gaming or security is your priority then stay wired.
If you insist on wireless then get something like a Linksys usb adapter.
Matched with a wireless router and you good to go.

For music and all around listening the STX is good, but again, for gaming, you want something like OMEGA Claro or Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium.
From what I read these have better positional sound.
I do love the sound of the STX.

Again, thanks for the informative responses.

bobfig, the HAF-X has nine expansion slots - doesn't this mean that I could fit 3 VGAs (thereby taking 6 slots), and still have room for more PCI cards? The only way I could see them taking more space is if I keep one empty PCI slot in between each card (thereby taking 8 slots, or 9 if you include the bottom/top one)... is this recommended?

Do you guys recommend keeping the 2600K and attempting to tri-fire, or should I go with a 1366 socket for tri-fire? I really don't know what 8x/8x/4 means, but if it's going to limit performance with this configuration...

Also, I should note that I've changed my mind and will not be OCing this rig for a while. I haven't built a computer before, so I'd rather get it up and running and become more intimate with the components before I try anything crazy like watercooling.

Also, I've got a (probably) silly question: does RAM take up the expansion slots (the same slots as the VGAs and PCI soundcard/wireless adapters)? Because if that's the case, how am I going to be able to fit 4x4GB RAM (because I'm getting greedy, sue me!) with a tri-fire set-up and a PCI soundcard?

Finally, can anybody point me in the right direction for the VGAs? I elaborated on my concerns at length in the first post - I know I want three 6970s, but am stuck trying to choose a make and whatnot.

Thanks for your time and patience.

You guys rock.

-13ack.Stab

Edit: Couch Potato - thanks, I'll be sure to check out those cards. I'll also take a look into USB adapters for wireless.

the haf-x could have 20 expansion slots but you cant fit that many because they have to be plugged into the motherboard to be used. as for the 8x/8x/4x that's the speed of the pci-e slots. 8x is ok for gfx cards but what worries me is the 4x as it would slow that card down. imo 3 gfx cards are overkill. if you just stay with 2 way sli/crossfire then that would leave you room for the wireless card ans the sound card. the rams slots are up by the cpu.

Only thing I would change is the memory - high speed memory offers little real world performance increase. Although, it doesn't seem like saving money is an issue for you

Also that soundcard is great for music, but I would go for a Titanium HD if you're using it mainly for gaming.

Instead of going to the 1336 socket, if you want to have good speed, grab a motherboard with the NF-200 so you can do x16-x16-x8 (Or was it all x16?).

A good example is the ASUS Maximum IV Extreme, it is a great motherboard for what you're looking at (Tri-Fire HD6970's).

If not, you could just grab an HD6990 + HD6970 (That would make it same as x3 HD6970's) and use any P67 motherboard with x8-x8.

I'd definitely go with an i7 2600k.

Ah mah gawd.

That board is a beast - I hadn't even considered it.

I can't see any disadvantages to going with it - rather, I can only see numerous upgrades over the P8P67 Deluxe.

You are my new hero.

On that note, however... might anybody be able to shed some light on my VGA dilemma (see first post for a detailed explanation).

Here's my 1.1 revision of my parts list:
  1. Case: HAF-X http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119225

  2. Processor: Intel i7-2600K http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115070

  3. Power Supply: Corsair AX1200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139014

  4. Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME (Rev 3.0) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-700-_-Product

  5. Memory:G.SKILL Ripjaw X + Turbulence II Series (4x4GB, Quad-Channel) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231452

  6. Video Card(s): 3x ATI Radeon HD 6970s (Trifire Configuration)

Note: I'm still clueless as to whether I should go reference or non-reference; see first post for full explanation.

  7. Hard Drive:

    1. Boot Drive: OCZ Vertex3 120 GB SSD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-706-_-Product
    2. Secondary SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 240 GB SSD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-707-_-Product
    3. Primary Storage: Seagate Barracuda XT (3TB, 6.0Gb/s) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148748
    4. Secondary Storage: Seagate Barracuda XT (3TB, 6.0Gb/s) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148748

Note: Okay, so I'm not sure if the 3TB drives are worth it - is going from 3.0Gb/s to 6.0Gb/s worth it? And I'm not sure if I will even ever be able to use the total 6TB worth of space.

Note 2: I've never used raid before, so I'm not sure if it's worth it (and which configuration is best). I could use some advice here in laymen's terms (I checked out the raid tutorial we have here on OCN, but it went over my head).

  8. Optical Drive:

I can't decide between two drives (and I'll probably use 2 drives of the same type total - someone mentioned using one blu-ray and one dvd drive, but the blu-ray drives I've selected both read and write to both blu-rays and dvds, so...).

    Option 1: ASUS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135248

    Option 2: LITE-ON http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106348

It looks like the ASUS can't write to BD-RE DL discs, while the LITE-ON can. They looks pretty much the same other than that - maybe they just forgot to list that under the specs or something.

  9. Wireless Cards: I want the computer to have the *option* of using wireless, even though it'll most certainly be wired. That said, I'm having trouble finding any wireless cards on Newegg. Are wireless adapters the same thing?

    Here are two different adapters:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...imate-n%206300

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833156310

  10. Sound Card:

    Asus Xonar Essence ST http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132014

    OR

HT | OMEGA Claro Halo XT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-005-_-Product

Note I cannot decide between these two soundcards. They both sound (hur hur) amazing, from what I can tell. What do you guys think?

Thanks a bunch, guys. You've been really helpful.

My main hurdle at this point is the selection of which 6970 model I want to go with, I think.

Go with reference cards.

Or you could go with the non-reference version of Sapphire with the black cooler.

But the best option for multi-GPU's is having the stock cooler.

Or you could go with the non-reference version of Sapphire with the black cooler.

Is this the card you're talking about? To be completely frank, I can't tell the difference between reference and non-reference cards on Newegg (except for the obvious ones - you know, the dual fan designs, etc).

The stock cooler... as in just using the stock fan on the reference cards?

Thanks for the fast reply.
