Processor Bottleneck for crossfired 6950's?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my video card from my HD 4870 to crossfired 6950's. I was told that my processor would be a bottleneck to the video cards? I'm just curious how this is? and why it is? I just upgraded to the 940 about 2 months ago and I just don't have the cash to throw at a new processor, Mobo, and some fast ddr3 ram. Is my system really that much of a bottleneck at this point?

Thanks
-Mitchell-

It's always good to invest in a more powerful CPU, it saves you money in the long run.
You could keep this CPU, but I would definitely OC it 4.0Ghz. Invest 50-60 in a good CPU cooler. The cooler master 212 should do the trick.

Or you could upgrade to something like a 955, 965, or something from the X6 series. But any AMD cpu you get you should probably OC it, they are very OC friendly, especially the black edition ones.

well I'm still using the ddr2 board and the 940 was the best i could go with the older socket type. The 955 and up and the x6 series are the new am3 chipset correct? So i'd have to get a new mobo and ram anyway.

I got a Thermaltake spin q going on this weekend. I had it before but didn't have thermal paste to put it on when I got the 940 on there. So I'm actually putting that on this coming week. I want around 3.8+ out of it. Will those really make it that high though? and only the speed is what is limiting it then?

thanks for the quick response.

your fine aslong as you can keep on playing games around 60FPS

When i had 6950 CF even my cpu clocked at 4ghz was a bottleneck in some games

Btw: i had reall difficulties trying OC my phenom2 920 on a AM2+ Board. couldnt get it past 3,6ghz and it runned wel hot to. best 24/7 OC for me was just 3,3ghz

what was it stock clocked at? I had a 65nm phenom and couldn't clock it much as all. This one sets at 3ghz but it's the 45nm so I hope it can clock more than 3.6

Well heck that sucks, what should I have to completely run it fine with no bottleneck?

If you're worried about bottleneck, you can always get 2x6850s or 2x6870s or a single 6970, or go Nvidia with a GTX570.

So the 6850's are that much different than the 6950?

6950s are much better than the 6850. It's just that a Phenom II (even at 4.0GHz) will bottleneck 2x 6950s, so you might as well go for cheaper ones.

At what resolution are you gaming?

If it's 1920x1080, I'd just go for 6850/6870 Crossfire.

well shoot, might as well go ahead and go with the 6950's and just upgrade along later, really would like to do a 3 screen eyefinity setup?

How much would the "bottleneck" hold back performance?
