How do you install a .img OS to a DVD?

Thread Starter
I have a Macbook Pro which I am going to dual-boot with Windows Server 2008 R2 since I am too poor to go out and buy Windows 7. I am downloading the OS from the Microsoft website right now, and I already got my S/N.

The file is 2.8 gigabytes and it is a ".img" file. How do I burn this to a disc? It can be with either Windows 7 (on my desktop) or OS-X since I can just transfer the file over, but I think my Macbook has a DVD burner as well.

What program should I use to burn it and what feature in the program is it? By feature, I mean last time I tried a disc burning program it gave me like 6 different types of burning methods to choose from (media, playback, data, etc).

You might try an ISO burner to put the .img file on there. Though im not quite sure what a .img is /: worth a try none the less. A quick google search for and ISO burner will find ya a free one.

>Disk Utility (Mac OS X 10.3 or later)

-Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder (/Applications/Utilities).
-If the disk image you want to use doesn't appear in the list, drag its icon to the Disk Utility window.
-Select the disk image and click Burn.
-Insert a blank CD or DVD into your computer's optical drive and follow the onscreen prompts.

>Disk Copy (Mac OS X 10.0 through 10.2.8)

-Open Disk Copy in the Utilities folder (/Applications/Utilities).
-From the File menu, choose Burn Image. Don't open the disk image file before choosing this command.
-A navigation dialog appears. Locate and select the disk image file.
-Click Burn.
-When prompted, insert a blank disc into the optical media drive.
-Click Burn.

Note: When burning a disc from a disk image, the burned disc will have the same format as the disk image. If you need a disc that will work on different computers, burn the disc in the Finder.

I use imgburn. It is free and works great in windows. You can get it from here.
http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Once you have the .iso downloaded and have imgburn installed. Simply launch imgburn and select the "write image file to disk' option. Browse to where the .iso is and then click burn.

Side note: some of the .iso, images are rarred up, so you may have to unrar it before you burn it.

Have you ever considered using a usb flashdrive to install an OS?

It's a bit more convenient then burning a DVD and its faster too

I can't install it via Bootcamp assistant if I use a flashdrive.

I'd recommend InfraRecorder. But I'm a sucker for FOSS.
