GTX 480, Overkill for 1280x1024?

Thread Starter
Is a GTX480 overkill for 1280x1024 resolution? Max AA, Max details. I think my monitor goes up to 75Hz. Will I be seeing 75FPS minimum at all times with vsync on? Or will it drop to around 30FPS with some games?

I am also thinking about upgrading my motherboard to support SLI. Maybe put my 9800GTX+ on there for PhysX. Would that do anything at all for a framerate boost alongside this card or would it be a complete waste?

And what about GTX 480 in SLI? (for when I upgrade my monitors to 1920x1080).. Will I need to be running liquid cooling to keep them at good temps or can I get by with just air alone? And should I toss the 9800GTX+ PhysX card at that point or keep it in there?

Thanks

Yes, it is overkill. inb4 people rant that you should get a different gpu and spend extra money on a better monitor.
Well if you're going to upgrade your monitor in the near future then by all means go for it, but really a GTX 480 isn't needed for that resolution.

And in my opinion GPU physX is kind of dead. I never use it and there are only so many titles that even can use it. And I wouldn't exactly consider most of them good games.

your best option is sli 480 on a 1920x1080, you'll be at 60fps 100%, basically overkill for that type of resolution but you will gain constant and steady high fps, air is fine unless you want to go crazy and overclock them really high, you'll get by with just air though it'll be noisy and really hot

There is no overkill in this hobby!

the 9800gtx added would just slow the 480sli down.

even with 480 sli... some games like metro2033 will dip below 60fps at 1920x1080

You would have a pretty nice bottleneck on your system, as it is. If the GTX295 I tested works as a GTX480 then you would be losing at least a 25-30%, which is a TON.

Metro 2033 seems to run faster on ATi GPUs. Most titles seem to run a bit faster on nVidia GPUs of the same caliber (by a slight margin) but that is what I am observing with the benchmark videos... If the price is right I will definitely go with a ATi card though.
