I think the same, but have come to the exact opposite conclusion.
Current tower coolers are indeed reaching their limits, however I believe this is because there is less and less room for improvement.
A new design won't likely be better. With any reasonable materials or manufacturing processes, the most cooling that will fit in an acceptable volume has been achieved.

Since it's the same thing but with more heatpipes it should perform better unless there is some serious hidden screw-up somewhere.

They are engineered to perform.
Coolers that look flashy that don't deliver ultimately do not sell well.
You cannot perform well if you deviate too radically from the established designs that work, unless you are willing to price yourself out of any market.
