Okay just wanted to clarify because of this:

Anyone know if this sound card can use both stereo mix AND microphone independently (i.e. not one or the other)?
I thought he was asking my same question

I haven't owned a stand alone sound card since the early 2000's. Is it really that much of a performance increase compared to a onboard asus? Last time I did research it wasn't... but for this price point I'm considering it.

Edit: Oh boy, I just checked Guillemot's website and my good old Hercules Muse 5.1 dvd sound card just got drivers for windows 7 32/x64 released a month ago... I'm seriously thinking about installing it hahaha.

The only sound card I remember that allow both to be used simultaneously is the X-Fi XtremeMusic. It's cheap(~$30) and it's great(performs on par with the DG).
Thanks I'll take a look at it.

Unless you want to use your sound card to record both what is input in your microphone AND what is output to your speakers?
Close. I'm trying to keep microphone and stereo mix as separate enabled audio streams that I can mix together with VAC (virtual audio cable). Why? I'm planning to stream SC2 games to JTV.

lol... a few dollars cheaper than TigerDirect. I received mine yesterday, and I was in for a surprise:

Can't read chinese <_<
Both the drivers on the cd and asus's website are like that. I haven't found a way to switch it to english yet.

Stereo mix will mix both together. If I select Wave input in Audacity and Mic input in Skype, I can record "what u hear" in Audacity and my voice in Skype. So yes, they can be separate.

Finally figured what was wrong. System locale was set to Chinese, and that causes all non-unicode programs to display Chinese.

I'm not sure what version of Realtek you have, but I went from the Realtec ALC889A onboard audio to the Asus Xonar DG, and the sound improvement was definitely noticeable to me. The sound is much clearer, fuller, more detailed, and the bass goes much deeper and hits harder. There is also zero hiss or background noise with the Asus DG. For $18 I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade from onboard audio to the Asus DG, you will definitely notice the improvement (imo).
