Once again, Bioware is showing that it has no idea how to write a story, or give characters depth.

Instead of a world that feels alive, they provide a world where you are in control of every situation, and everyone falls to our whim.

Bring on the witcher 2. a real rpg.
Don't know which species you belong to, but if I love up a gal, then love up another one 2 years later, and both gals still love me, there IS going to be a cat fight and tempers flaring, Reapers be damned. That is simply the way "love" and people work. There is no logic to define it, only a messy reaction of hormones and emotions.

You do actually have the choice if you even want to start said relationships, I know even if I was busy saving the world, I would still want to get laid. Simple fact is that is what most gamers like is having romance in their games.

Funny that you bring up The Witcher 2 considering how much banging you're going to be doing in that game.

Hasn't every post-Interplay Bioware game been on rails?

The Mass Effect series especially has seemed more about using a game as a vehicle to present something akin to an interactive TV series--it would be pretty easy to block any given planetfall as an episode. Bioware has never been focused on letting players explore and manipulate environments.

The environments, the people in them, and the choices you have made so far tend to be superficial: they (as yet) have had no appreciable effect on the ultimate outcome of the story.

Which is fine. It doesn't mean Bioware is making bad games, nor does it mean they aren't fun. It's just that they are focused on telling a single story a dozen different ways, and that tends to turn off the people who are looking to feel like they are building a story on their own.

Oh, sure. I agree with everything you just said. I wasn't making the argument that the Mass Effect series is a true RPG. I have always felt it to be an adventure with RPG elements. The RPG elements are those of the character development and decisions you make. That was solely my point, to refute the argument that a game that spoon fed you the story, characterization, decisions, etc... could be called a "true RPG"

I don't think I've bothered with any of the "love" stuff in either Mass Effect. Try focusing on making a decent game this time. Like..

Its kinda funny, pumping all your points into "Charm" and "Intimidate" really early on you can get a lot of story elements overexerted, but you end up being weak and have horrible accuracy.

the fact people are ignoring, is that by giving the player all these choices about who to romance and etc, is that by doing so, they have pretty much made it clear that the NPCS are nothing but playthings, not people. They have no sexual preference, they lack any real motivations of their own. They written and handled in a way that removes any sort of identity from them.

Every single loyalty mission involved you making the decision on what happens. Mordin waits for you to decide what to do, so does jack, miranda, need i go on. Not one of them reacts in a way that they should, they all just react to your actions, like they really have no beliefs or motivations of their own, regardless of the drivel that they spouted to start the quest.

What should have happened is that you order jacob to put the gun down, and he refuses, and he shoots his father, regardless of your actions. He is his own man, and because of that conflict at that point, the situation between the 2 of off in a different path.

The fact is that mass effect didnt give you choice. it gave you control. You didnt make a choice and accept the consequences. it gave you This is what happens if you do this, and this is what happens if you do this. There was never a If you do this you dont know what is going to happen, whether good, bad or worse. The game never makes you react to any thing, you are always in control of what happens, and that ruins games for me.

You cant create a living breathing world, and have it revolve around you. It doesnt work that way. Either you create something filmlike that has everything revolve around you. Or you create a world that requires the player to realize that he is merely in the world and events are unfolding.

I dont need a bunch of shipmates sitting around waiting for me to tell them how they should feel. I want shipmates that tell me how they feel, and I have to deal with it. I want them to get pissed when i choose to ignore their suggestions, and carry on with the mission instead of saving some civilians. So they ignore my orders and go to save them instead, leaving me to ponder whats going to happen to him/her and how the relationship is going to be handled from then on.
