Drawbacks to choosing a GS800 over HX850??

post #1 of 5

Ok so when i built my new setup i got the GS800,its by corsair as well so i was fairly sure about quality,rated at 800W and sli certified and all of that.I have 1 GTX570 now and at some point would go sli and have read in all the reviews that this will do just fine for that.So my real question is,what are the drawbacks to gettings a "lower end" PSU when they both have same watts?
From reviews i sort of understand the technical reasons for why one is better than the other,but im not really sure

Do i have to worry about some kind of instablity or bottleneck?Thanks!!

The only tangible draw backs are the GS800 is non-modular (so it's harder to cable manage) and has less power on the 12v rail (so thus some GPU setups could be limited by the unit, like Dual 6990's overclocked.)

Really, the point to getting a high end power supply is to get one that is reliable, and has as close to perfect DC output as possible.

The older a PSU gets, usually the worse the voltage regulation and ripple suppression get worse.
So thus, having a better unit means you have one that'll last longer.

Also, there's a 4 year warranty difference between the two units.
GS800 = 3 year warranty
HX850 = 7 year warranty

I've run a pair of GTX570s with a 750TX and a 850TX folding at 900core 1.1v (yes I worried) and it never gave any troubles at all.

Usually I fold at 875core 1.075v
