best upgrade

Thread Starter

I have built my first pc recently, sorta.

Ok I went to frys and bought a gateway prebuilt gaming system, It turned out to be a piece of crap and the screwed me around on the warranty.

So I went and ordered a new mobo after shipping my pc back to gateway 2 times at my expence. 60$ each time.

I bought evga mobo on recommendation from a friend.

http://www.frys.com/product/6022808?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I also bought a nice case antec 9002,
So I bassicly pulled all the parts of the gateway and put them on my new board. This was my first "homebrew"

About a month later I added a 80 SSD boot drive also.

SO I am rocking

i7 860 o/c to 3.8 ghz with hyper 212 cooler
8g of ddr3 (not sure on brand or timings)
80g corsair SSD
1.5 TB seagate 7200rpm data drive
750w oem psu
raidon 5850 gpu that came with the gateway, so I guess its a reference card?

So I have saved a little money up and I have about 300$ To spend on my pc.
What would you reccomend to get the best bang for my buck in improvement?

I am thinking either bumping up to 16g of good ram or a new gpu
I wish I wold have gotten the next better mobo the p55 sli or crossfire model so i could try duel gpus.

Thanks for your time here

Only game I really play is Eve-online

since the only game you play isn't so graphic intense. your 5850 will be fine for now, no need for dual gpu unless you are going to play something crazy later on. It doesn't really matter if yours is reference or not. The ref edition will let you overclock higher but you don't really need it based on your needs.

The only upgrade i see you do here is get a better PSU before that pos blows up and ruin your whole system. If you dont do any encoding or graphic work, the extra ram isn't really necessary. I say you buy a decent psu for around 100 and use the rest of 200 on your girl (if no girlfriend, stripper works too)

haha congrats. Based on your configuration and needs, there are really no need to upgrade for anything else. Like i said above, extra ram only if you do encoding or graphic work, better ram for either benchmarks or higher overclock (assuming you are not satisfied with your current OC) you already have a hdd for storage and SSD. Decent mobo, cpu and gpu. Only viable upgrade is really the PSU

also when I try to o/c the gpu with the CCC program I get fragmentation ? and odd flashes on the screen, Could this been from bad power, I also noticed the voltages are a a little low via the evga o/c tool as in 11.91 on 12v rail 4.88 on 5v.
I think I will go ahead and order a psu.

if all you play is eve there is no reason to upgrade your gpu.

not worth the upgrade to go 1156 so i say wait for ivy bridge/bulldozer if you want to go that route.

also 16gb? for what? most ppl dont use 4 with everything open... unless u make a ramdisk

only thing i would probably do is replace the no name gateway psu.

if the money is really burning a hole in your pocket u should sell the 5850 and get a 6990

save the money for later upgrade because your rig is pretty capable of playing any titles right now at high settings. your psu should be fine that rig won't even use 300w at the wall.

You don't need a new GPU to play Eve online, but if you have a new GPU, you'll likely buy games to use it.

I'd get something nice like a 6950, then put the rest of the money toward some games at the Steam Summer Sale.

It's more fun than a new power supply. And you can scrape together enough money for a name-brand PSU that meets your needs unnoticed soon enough. If you shop around and find a sale, you might be able to get the PSU and GPU, then scrape up a few bucks for games. Either way works.
