Will this stuff work for a HTPC?

I have a rig that has:
Pentiun D dual core @ 2.8 GHz
3GB ddr2 667
7900GS

My dad has as nice 50" flatscreen and I want to give him a flat screen, it is 1920x1080 and I wan to know if that rig will be enough for 1080p video playback and DVD/Bluray use.

Thanks,

Get a low end ATI/nvidia card for it, and your set!

4350, GT210, anything of that nature.

Depending on noise i'd grab a Coolermaster Hyper 212 for that CPU, or even a TX3.

Stock cooler pentium D is LOUD.

My Dell laptop has a core 2 duo, and 512 of dedicated graphics memory. 4gb of ram ddr3 and is running windows 7 64 Ultimate and stutters when playing 1080p video in WMP or WMC. This is why I recently upgraded.

No, it won't.

1. Can you provide the motherboard model ? If it is compatible with the newer Conroe based CPU's, like the Core 2 Duo E4xxx or E6xxx, or even the even the Pentium Dual Core E2xxx or E5xxx, it would be much better to grab one, even if it's second hand. They are a lot cooler running than the Pentium D 2.8 Ghz, and more powerful too.

2. The 7900GS only has the Purevideo HD version 1 engine, and as such is not at all the best for playing back Blueray. And when it comes to acceleration of Flash based video (Youtube, etc), it does not have the necessary hardware. If you are looking for a card to offload Blueray and HD Flash, among other formats, try to buy at least an 8 series Nvidia GPU or an HD4xxx series Radeon GPU.

Like SpeedNuggeT suggested, the HD4350 /4550 or GT200 cards are excellent and cheap Media Cards able to do what a Media Center is supposed to do. If you want something more recent you can get a Radeon HD6450 or a Nvidia GT520.

Edit: forgot to add: get a passively cooled card. The less noise the Media Center makes, the more enjoying it will be.

Cheers!

dont go bashing pentium Ds ... mine will run Crysis at 80FPS on medium settings... it can definitely handle 1080p video

as for the GPU, stay away from gt 210s... they are horrible cards... i have one and i will vogue for that.. i dont know much about ATI so i wont comment on those, but i would get something along the lines of an 8800 or a 240... anything higher than a 260 should just scream streaming 1080p

I already have a quiet cpu cooler on there so I'm good on that front.

A new CPU is out of the question as I don't really want to invest in a lga775 cpu, though I could but a new gpu for it. Would this GT520 be good?

If I bought that 520 would I be good?

It is assuming you have a PCIe slot and not AGP.

Get this if you have a PCIe slot.

Why do you suggest to stay away from the 210? I just recently upgrade my 3450 to a 210 and has improved the video playback. Like all video cards you just have to tinker with the settings but since I have a decent cpu the 210 is good for me at least.

Plus I upgraded from 256 to 512mb for the video card memory.
