Poor Laptop SSD performance

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
I have a toshiba x205 s9349 laptop that I just upgraded to windows 7 and an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD but Im getting poor (less than optimal) performance. I updated to the lastest firmware from OCZ and got slightly worse performance (very little difference).

The laptop chipset is a PM965. I updated the toshiba provided chipset driver to the newest online
Version: 9.2.0.1030
* Target Products: Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family
* 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) processor family

from Intel's website. This produced no change.

What is confusing me is another toshiba driver that enables turbo memory and the "Intel Matrix Storage manager" which I believe is what will allow me to use AHCI drivers. I dont know how to figure out what mode windows is using right now, but I would be willing to bet that my poor performance is because of IDE mode vs ACHI. I know the registry trick to enable ACHI after an initial install in IDE mode, but I cant enable AHCI through the bios as there is no option. I'm wondering if I have to first install these "Storage matrix drivers" then somehow enable AHCI. Unfortunately after the install of these drivers the performance gets worse. Any experience or ideas with this?

Wow, maybe AHCI doesn't make that big of a difference.http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=505&Itemid=38
