Which Android phone NO CONTRACT??? (craiglist or etc.)

I was set on getting the iPhone 3gs but after I saw some of my friend with a Samsung Galaxy S I want an android. I love how big and vibrant that screen is and how the UI is compared to apple. However I'm a noob when it comes to phones and I need help choosing one. I have T-mobile and can't get a data plan so I have to buy it off Craigslist or anywhere that with NO CONTRACT. I use my phone mostly for texting and calling and I want good signal and battery life. I also want to use it for music and web browsing on wifi.

It can be used or new, but has to be good condition and my max price is $300 although I rather spend $200-250. Thanks in advance

update: I finally got the Samsung Vibrant (t-mobile's galaxy S) for $250 used. I almost got a new Nexus one on ebay for 260 but I like the Vibrant more. It looks to be in very good condition so I think that it was a almost new or refurbished. This phone's screen is so beautiful and android is awesome! Everything works fine except that the internet wont connect when I charge the phone (I use wifi only). Does any one know why this is happening? Also what should I do now? upgrade to 2.2/2.3 and how do I do it. I looked on xda dev and I got so confused!

With that low of a ceiling, you're going to be stuck with some of the last gen hardware. Stuff like the original Moto-DROID, which might not be as shiny and nice as you want.

However, I have a moto-DROID, and I think it's awesome.

Ive seen galaxy s phones go that low even off contract. You should also be able to find infuse 4gs for that price.

well I see the Samsung Galaxy on Craislist for 250 and the HTC Inspire for 300-350. I don't mind it being last gen or used; I just don't want a POS phone. The problem is there is so many choices, I don't even know where to begin to narrow down my search but i like the 4 inch screen on the Galaxy.

I say an original moto droid or HTC wildfire, both in your price range, both good phones and very hackable

Thanks and +rep for all the reply's so far. Is it safe to buy one that is already rooted? What are the advantages of rooting, is it like jail-breaking/unlocking on the iPhone?

Where is my rep?

You should be safe buying one thats already rooted.

Its sort of like jailbreaking... its more like unlocking all the protection implemented by manufacturers and carriers in android. Another important part of rooting is unlocking the bootloader, it lets you run custom kernels(and therefore pretty much anything).

I'd say go with a Nexus One. I love mine. Bought it from my roomate. It's still heavily supported and one of the most modded phones out there. Devs love the phone. It's easy to root and it's so nice running Gingerbread (I'm using Cyanogen 7). Battery life is amazing. On Froyo, I'd get home from a day of work and be at about 30% battery. On GB, I get home and I'm at 70-80% depending on what I've done during the day.

Nexus One or S. Google treats them very well. They are the first to get everything. Don't worry about rooting. It pretty damn hard to ruin your phone.

Not many phones people are bringing up will have such a great vibrant screen like your friends galaxy. My wife has one and it puts my droid 2 to shame. If you can find one get it.
