The venture will most likely be extremely proftitable in the short and long run.
Nokias position on the third world markets and the shift to smartphones will eventually lead to a more marginalized market in the west. As long as Nokia and Microsoft can offer cheap and durable systems they will win this world.

Microsoft winning is the best way to go: no cloudcrap, no handset monopoly just pure good old fashion anti trust lawsuits and lovely standardization.
I kinda like the Google Music Cloud that's coming out. Means I don't need to keep my SD card packed - then again I have a Zune HD for my media.

Symbian is excellent for people who want a basic phone that calls and texts, without silly frills.

I think this is a good move on MS and Nokia's part. Nokia has been losing their hold on the market for the past year or so (maybe two?) not because of their hardware, but because the majority (almost all) of their handsets run the aging Symbian OS which has clearly been trounced by iOS and AndroidOS. Nokia builds great phones hardware wise, but the operating system they're putting in the phones is what's hurting them(Nokia). So I think the windows phone7 OS, which by and large has been well received, and the great hardware Nokia builds will be a good pairing. And maybe, just maybe, it'll save Nokia's bacon.

What's wrong with Symbian? You ever been to Europe? Symbian dominates the European scene and pretty much always has. The later incarnations were more advanced than anything out for most of the Cellular history. Not to mention the OS was the first to use Webkit and have flash.

Basic? I web browse, email, everything, from my Nokia E63. The features are there. Sure, your iDevices and Androids have much more powerful hardware and software, and can play many decent games, but the Nokia is for getting ***** done
