Upgrading from a 4850, need help

Thread Starter
I've been sitting on this ATI 4850 card since 11/08. It's getting long in the tooth but held up when I was still on a 1600x1200 CRT. I upgraded to a 27" 1920x1080 monitor some months ago and took some expected framerate hits on games like CODBLOPS. I'm looking forward to playing the next COD MW3, the new Deus Ex, and Diablo III whenever it comes out.

I hate spending more than $200 on a video card but I'll do it if it's worth it. Should I upgrade now to a 6850 (which easily clears my budget), or bide my time and buy a used 6950 here (or get lucky and find an open box reference 6950 on newegg) and unlock the shaders? Would that be worth the price difference?

Also, is there any point in doing this right now? These games haven't been released yet and won't be until August (Deus Ex)/November (MW3). If I wait for November will there be a new generation of ATI cards that I should have held out for?

Pick up the 6950 1GB that someone posted in the deals thread. $179. You cannot beat that for performance to price ratio.

That is incredibly cheap... but PowerColor? Who the hell are they? I'd feel a lot better if it was a Sapphire, MSI, et al (though it probably wouldn't be this cheap)!

I've used Powercooler in the past. I had no issues but I can't really comment from a one time experience.

I paid $230 for my XFX with comparable dual fan cooler. It was a HUGE upgrade from my 4890 so I can only imagine how big of an upgrade it would be from your 4850..

I think this is the best suggestion so far. And as far as how good of a company they are, lets just say I've heard more bad things about XFX than PowerCooler -- and this is coming from an XFX 5850 owner.

Actually, this link says it costs $239.99. I don't like your suggestion unles you show me where the $209.99 one is! And that's still $30 more than the PowerColor.

I'm not trying to be a dick but listing prices I've already seen on newegg isn't helpful. What is helpful is deciding between a 6850 and 6950 coming from my 4850. It seems like the PowerColor is worth it.

You could also tell me if I should get that deal now or wait until August if you guys think there will be a price drop by then. If no pricedrop then I'll get that amazon deal today.

EDIT: ah, hell, the powercolor is gone again. Now what?
