SS Strider 850W Gold: better PSU for ~$150?

Thread Starter
I recently re-purposed my old faithful HX620W as the PSU for my HTPC/server project. The HX620W is way overkill for the HTPC but I decided to upgrade my main rig's PSU so the HX620W was a bit of a hand-me-down.

Anyway, NCIX (my preferred etailer) has the Silverstone Strider 850W Gold on sale for $155. PSU looks really nice: fully modular, 80+ Gold rating and enough output for any future needs. Only thing is I haven't been able to find any in-depth reviews about the 850W Gold model. JonnyGuru did a review of the 850W non-Gold model which netted the PSU a mediocre score of 7. Not entirely sure how the 80+ Gold version stacks up against the non-Gold unit...

In the ~$150 CDN price range is there a superior PSU? Required features are: semi-modular design (fully modular is a plus), 800+ watts and 80+ rating (higher the better).

can't really find a lot of reviews/examples for this PSU, but Silverstone is generally good with their power supplies
Also it being gold rated 80 Plus means its not just a simple POS psu

If you're worried, spend the extra $30 and get the Corsair
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=53719&...acture=Corsair

or go $50 more and get the Seasonic X850.

Well I've done a bit more poking around on the web. Seasonic X850 and Corsair AX850 seem to be neck-and-neck for efficiency but both come at increased cost (Seasonic = $210, Corsair = $190).

It seems the general consensus is that the two PSUs above rates just a hair better than the Silverstone but they also costs at least $35 more. I'm not sure 1-2% increased efficiency is worth the extra ~$40 so I am still leaning towards the ST850F-G...

More is known about the Silverstone Strider Plus I think. Strider Plus 750/850/1000 should be all pretty good. I think the Gold ones were a little bit worse aside from efficiency, though they're not bad at all. I don't remember what was worse.

Silverstone Strider Plus 850W (fully modular, 80+ silver) - $140

XFX Black Edition 850W (partially modular, great performance, 80+ silver) - $140

OCZ ZX1000 (fully modular, 80+ gold) - $170 ($140 after MIR)

Some reading material for you. These should all be pretty good choices. There tend to be shiny things on the conclusions pages:

Thanks mikeaj for your very informative post.

The OCZ ZX is a sweet PSU but a little out of my price range. I can price-match the Strider Plus 850W down to $130 at NCIX which makes it a really good buy. I'm basically sold on the Strider Plus at this point...

I haven't read about the new Gold Strider series yet (is it Enhance-built like most of the Striders in this wattage range?) but the XFX Black is most definitely a very 'known entity', it's a Seasonic-built, Silver-level efficiency ...

Honestly for $10 more than a unit that's a question-mark at this point ... I'd be inclined to drop the $10 if you need to move now.

Yes, it seems there is not much info available for the Strider Gold series.

Strider Plus 850W, on the other hand, is well-documented and fits nicely in my price range. However, after reading JonnyGuru's hilarious review of the XFX Black 850W, I may have to consider that unit as well... The neon green accenting is a bit of a turn-off though, despite the excellent quality of the unit.

You can price match the AX 850 down to $170 at NCIX.
http://www.directcanada.com/products...acture=CORSAIR

The corsair warranty is pretty sweet. I've already had mine replaced (little noise I didn't like) - no questions asked, they sent me a new one. Also the sleeving on the AX 850 is pretty good quality.

I also like the look of that OCZ, but I would hate dealing with them for an RMA.
