People prefer Nvidia specific features and probably have better driver experience. And for the best performance, people will pay that premium.
CUDA + PHYSX + 3d on 3 monitors...

AMD's only have one Dual Link DVI connector on each card so can get 120HZ onto two displays with CF...
HDMI 1.4a displays aren't completely out yet!

Also these cards seem better in form for being sandwiched together if you want 2 or 3 cards together... The gtx 580's have air vents that suck air from the ends of their cards compared to the leafblowers boxes.

But seriously if you have the money and wish to have 580s then why not? It all boils down to personal preference and what you think has the best value to you.

I wouldn't choose AMD multi GPU setups for a while because of my experiences but that's just me. Think what is important for you, read some reviews get some opinions and decide after that.
OP has a 1090T.

that's no reason to say that trifire beats tri-SLI... you could have added something like: "with your CPU the trifire setup might beat the tri-SLI setup" ( and I say might because in the first test [H] did the third 580 was running in x4 mode, which is horrible if you're running surround/eyefinity resolutions)

And yes I did not notice that OP had a phenom in his rig, but that does not change the fact that the [H] review was flawed.

is money an issue? if not, why not go for 6990/590 lol. Or like the rest of them said, 580 SLI. Most cost efficient would b to go 6950's w/shader unlock in CF.

I may be but it sounds like the OP is saying he is going to keep 4 GPUS and switch between SLI and Crossfire dependant on which provides better performance ingame on a 1080p monitor.

Even if money is NO OBJECT why would you do this? Better off to light cigars with money while dropping down the rest on the Black on the roulette wheel than keeping all four cards.
No one seemed to say this but ... SLi scalability is much more CPU dependent than the Crossfire.

So, with a 1090T ... i really don't think you can get the full potential out of the 580's ...
580's are a hell of a card ... So, i think you'll be really good with both ... Nvidia drivers are, usually, more stable ... although i never had problems with nvidia or amd drivers
