Just noticed that Sega's interface for playing their old console games is a total joke.

I'd suggest a happy compromise. Buy the games and then play them in a far better emulator than the official one that's provided.

So no one recommends the Total War pack? Seems like a lot of content for the price. I do hear that the AI on these games isn't the best but with all the community mods and patches that has been alleviated to some extent.

Anyone have any more insight into these games? Rome Total War supposedly is considered one of the best games of all time (or so says Wikipedia...), any truth to that?

It really depends on the person. I like RTS games but I can't stand strategy games like Total War. Meanwhile friends of mine rave about games like Total War. I would try playing a demo or something to see if it's right for you.

ALL the total war games are amazing. I recommend them wholeheartedly and I'm a huge fan. It combines some of the the macro strategy of Civ games with RTS chess like elements when you play the battles. Very fulfilling. Just don't ever play on easy settings!

RTW is very good but the graphics are a bit outdated at this point. I would skip it if I were you (cuz you want some eye candy with your death), and start with medieval 2 or Shogun 2. Empire is really good but it's the most complex of all the TW games so you will want some experience before you fall down that rabbit hole. Napoleon is supposed to be amazing but I haven't played... very similar to empire.

One of the problems with the total war games in the past has been with initial releases... problems with random CTD and slow performance that are all fixed up at this point. All the games are very stable now and very well patched.

Mods are widely available but I'm always reluctant to introduce instability and tend to steer clear. If you must mod, stick with the "Darth Mod" for the various games and only go with mods that darth recommends and accounts for in his modding. party on

I bought Empire Total War when it was on sale once, because everyone said it was really good. I didn't really play much of it, then Napoleon went on sale, and I bought that for the same reason. I haven't even downloaded Napoleon and I don't really have any plans to.

I'd recommend playing demos of them before buying, because they're really not for everyone.

Total War games are fun. There is a slight learning curve in the beginning if you are not used to strategy games. Once you get past that, the game is fun to play. The best part is sieging castle walls and crushing your opponents.

fair enough. Ok I'll put it this way: If you have ever liked a civilization game and a command and conquer game you will like at least one of the total war games. It's a two-fer. Fortunately you can play either battles only or campaign map only and aren't forced to do both all the time.

One thing to consider is your interest in the historical period. If you prefer your soldiers have axes and arrows instead of guns and cannons then you know not to buy empire/napoleon.

I actually played a fair amount of Civilization V (might have been IV actually) once and quite enjoyed it. Maybe I just needed to give Empire Total War more of a chance.
