Get Retribution, it has all of the multiplayer content of the first 2 DOWIIs and no GFWL.

It's an RTS that focuses more on the combat, holding points and upgrading your units than resource collection.
Very fun, and if you get tired of the RTS part, there's the last stand, which is a whole nother game in itself, fun little heroes vs hordes of monsters gameplay.

Is Dawn of War Soulstorm worth picking up?

I bought the Dawn of War platinum pack that includes the original game plus the first 2 expansions. Would I be missing out on an important part of the series if I don't spring for this, the third and final expansion?

I don't think so... only if you really like those factions... I come from a background in the table top game which was well prior to the computer games. So to some of those people who played the table top game or read the books might like it purely for the extra races.

However, having played all the DoW and DoW2 games I think Retribution is hands down the best as it has everything you want and without GFWL (Games for Windows Live, which is horrible). After play DoW2 Retribution there really is no reason to go back and play the rest unless you want the campaign in the original releases.

Thank you for your input. I do want to play through them all but I'll hold off on soulstorm. If I could get it for the EU steam sale price (around $5) I'd jump on it but not for $10, at least for now.

No problem. Glad I could help. If you dig into the multiplayer I might be playing in the next week or so.

Sure. That stand alone mode seems to me a tad dota like so I'm sure that will be a lot of fun to go along with the whole package (DoW 2 Retribution). Just add me whenever you want my steam link is in my sig.
