4870 dying ?

Thread Starter
So, let me start at the beggining, I bought this card, a PowerColor HD 4870 PCS+, the 512mb version, back in dec 2008, right after I received the card I ran Crysis Warhead and got those dreaded white and black boxes following with a CTD from the game, obviously I feared for the worst, I was pretty sure the card was fubar'd and would have to send it back to the store, and wait 1 month for them to solve the mess but I really wasn't in the mood for that, also I had paid for a regular PowerColor 4870 so I thought what the hell, lowered the GPU core to 750(the card has an stock clock of 800) and even managed to push the memory clock to 1050mhz and everything went smooth, for about 2 years.

Around the end of last year I started to get some random freezing on RF: Guerrila, I dismissed it as a problem with the game itself but around january, after I bought Dead Space 2 it started to give me the same problem I was having when I had bought it, the dreaded black and white boxes, the game didn't CTD, it would just freeze for about 5s and everthing went back to normal after that, and I wouldn't get more than 1 of those at each gameplay session, of around 3h, so again I didn't bothered much with it.

Now, the problem is that it is clearly escalating, I can't even play BC2 more, after less than 15min the game ctds, I managed to alleaviate the problem a bit by lowering the core clock even more, to 680mhz, but still it is annoying as hell. Altough even at that clock BC2 ctds after less than 15min.

So, basically I just want your guys input if this card is fubar'd or should I try something to keep it ? I really didn't want to buy another card, it still runs most of my games pretty good.

The weird thing is when I run furmark nothing happens, not even artefacts, it only happens on games, it even happened twice when I was just browsing.

tl;dr version:

4870 is having white and black boxes screen, followed by a CTD on most games, is it dead ?

Sounds like its getting a little warm to me. What are your temps like? Make sure the heat sink isn't plugged up with lint, animal hair, etc.

Personally, I don't like my GPUs' going over 75C. I know they can handle a lot more heat, but that's just how I like it. I've noticed, over the years, that some cards will start to artifact (the black and white boxes) when that 75C threshold is exceeded.

4870's tend to run warm as it is. I have 2, that if I don't set up a custom cooling profile in MSI's Afterburner, my cards will idle at 80C. I'm not sure what they'll load at sine I never ran it with the stock cooling profile.

I set it so the fan speed ramps up as the cards temps increase. Anything below 62C, I have it set so the fan runs at ~35-40%. Then by the time it reaches 75C, it'll be @ 100%.

Mind you when you set up a profile, your ambient temperatures will play a key role. I'm assuming that since you're in Brazil and you have relatively high temps and humidity, you'll most likely need your fan speed higher at idle than I will.
