How often do SATA cables go bad?

Just as the title states, how often to SATA cables go bad? Or IDE if you still use it. Have you had any experiences with a bad cable that scared you into thinking your drive was bad?

When I cable managed my case, I folded up my cable real tight and tucked it behind my motherboard tray. And one day (probably about 2-3 months from the last time I cable managed), I was getting Disk IO errors on bootup. Sometimes it would work, some times it wouldn't. So I was frightened that my drive was bad. But replaced the SATA cable and bam, been working ever since (2 months now).

So, how often have your SATA/IDE cables gone bad?

I think the only thing you have to worry about is physically damaging the cable somehow.

All I know is I replaced that cable, and BAM. Working puter. It literally wouldn't boot with that one. So I junked it after replacing the cable. And the HDD has been working since. No slowdowns or noticeable drive failure symptoms.

Meh, it's possible, but not likely. But at least you fixed your problem by getting a new cable. Better than buying a new hard drive.

I have helped a friend trouble shoot a bad cable and it was super annoying. We replaced everything before the cable and stupid us, the cable is the easiest thing. I finally tracked it down with S.M.A.R.T. and any drive you plug in with that cable will start reporting this.
Quote:
1990xC7UltraDMA CRC Error Count

The count of errors in data transfer via the interface cable as determined by ICRC (Interface Cyclic Redundancy Check).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

And the annoying part is there is no way to clear it. So you can potentially make your drives always through warnings even after the cables has been replaced.

You may have bent it too much, especially if you bent it close to the plug.

Probably bent it too much. But it was about mid-cable length. But regardless, that cable is most likely in a landfill somewhere already.
