Is This Going To Die Soon?

Thread Starter
I am wondering what the average life is of a laptop. My Inspiron 1525 has been running since August 2008.

Laptops last just as long as desktops do, really the only thing that will stop the laptop from permanently working will be the motherboard giving out or the charger port giving out, and that all depends. I've had a Dell from 2003 and it's still going STRONG. You have lots of time.

Other than that, nothing else will really stop a laptop, aside from the infamous laptop HDD failures due to dropping it, etc... However, that's replaceable.

According to this:

There's not a staggeringly high chance of a Dell breaking down in 3 years. Just treat it nicely, it's getting middle aged now.

This. My family has a Toshiba and a Dell. The Dell is only going to crap because the power plug isn't working anymore. Like, it literally broke off inside. And the Toshiba is just starting to show it's age. (and the power plug is a little wiggly.)

It will depend from model to model (not just manufacturer to manufacturer) and on the environment it's been working in - a high-dust, high-pollutant environment (say, if you or someone you live with smokes) will have a greater negative effect than if it hadn't been running in a high-pollutant environment.

However, to add some more perspective; an HP laptop I've handed down to a friend is still going strong after just short of 8 years, an Acer similarly after five, and I still use an old IBM T22 on occasion that I got second-hand; no idea exactly how old it is, but I've had it for 7.

Yeah I got mum a 2005 thinkpad off bay still works great 2 years later. I've never had a laptop die on me. The biggest weakness is probably fans if they wear out its unusable until you replace it and often the charger cord breaks down before the laptop.
