To combat Somali pirates, the U.S. Navy has relied on warships, snipers and SEAL teams. Now, it is turning to the heavy artillery: Internet gamers.

This month, the Office of Naval Research will roll out the military’s first-ever online war game open to the public, crowd-sourcing the challenges of maritime security to thousands of “players†sitting in front of their computers.

I searched and didn't see anything about this. My first news submission so I hope I did everything right.

If other people around the world are playing the same thing, couldn't other branches of military also form similar strategies as we do? I don't know how well this will turn out, but if they market the game good enough, then who knows.

“Three pirate ships are holding the world hostage. Chinese-U.S. relations are strained to the limit and both countries have naval ships in the area. Humanitarian aid for rig workers is blocked. The world is blaming the U.S. for plundering African resources.”
This seems like their playing games with political venues of opportunity rather then just "what is the best strategy to taking back the ship". Looking for political answers from the gaming community is a big waste of money in my opinion.

Now, if they had a game to run simulations on Somali hostage situations on the ship and ask gamers what best strategy to take back the ship then I could see the tech being put to good use.
