Switch to older higher Wattage PSU? (enermax EG485-AX-VHB(G)

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
So i've been running my sig rig on a 350W Bequiet PSU, which runs this system at it's current clocks. However, i know my cpu still can go a bit higher. WHen i pull out the 8800GTS, the soundcard and boot on 1 HDD, i can get it up to 3.4 and be 12hr stable, however when i add the 8800GTS and run furmark + ibt it's an instant reboot. So i'm short on power. COuld this be the lack on 3.3v and 5v lines?

A friend of mine had an old Enermax Coolergiant 480W PSU lying around, which i could have for shipping costs. I know it's old, but it was only used for 1,5 year in total. Also, i don't give a damn about efficiency and that, i just want to know if this would work better than my current PSU (which is about 2,5 years old now, btw)

Current PSU specs:
http://www.be-quiet.net/be-quiet.net...ebsiteLang=en#

Enermax Specs (EU version, which ill be using)
http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinio...-test-1_Page-5

Also quick compare:
Purepower:
12v1 = 18A
12v2 = 18A
3.3v = 21A
5v = 15A

Enermax:
3.3v = 34A
5v = 40A
12v1 = 16A
12v2 = 15A
I noticed in the review the enermax could not cope with 100% 12v load, but for shipping costs it doesn't matter that much, because i could sell it for a profit if it doesn't work better than my purepower L7.
Also, lol, psu calc's say i need a 480-500W+ PSU at my current setup and speeds, what a bunch of bull.
So what would you guys think? (especially asking phaedrus)

On paper your friends psu will be able to run your rig with the cpu and gpu, however. shipping cost will be close to 15 bux or so. might want to think getting a more efficient psu that is 80+ at least.

Shouldn't cost you more than 60 bux for a 400w-500w

Recon the currency i listed is is US dollars.

Shipping would cost me 6,75Euro, which is ~$10.
I'm worried my board takes mostly from the 12v lines though, if that's the fact it wont help since it's 12v capacity is actually a tad lower. But well, i think i'll just get the damn thing, test it, post some results. And if it's too weak, i'll just use them both
