$1000 budget to upgrade setup

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, I read through the monitor guide and other threads and I am even more confused as to what to get...

Basically, my current setup is two NEC 20WGX2 with a single radeon 4870. I have an asus p6t deluxe v2 and an i7-920@stock (iirc 2.66). First, I'm not 100% sure I need to upgrade my card, but assuming I do, I want to get something midline so I'm looking at the 6950 or the 560ti). I also plan on overclocking my processor with a guide I found on this site. I have a huge heat-sink and a juicy power supply, I just never got around to OCing it (i know, shame shame). So, I'm assuming I won't have to upgrade my mobo/proc

The monitors are great for my casual gaming and work, but I would like a bit more real estate. As a point of reference, in the last year I have played Civ5, Bloodline Champions (I recommend it!!), SC2. I may play a new FPS but I haven't touched black ops, MW2 or any shooter since amnesia dark descent, CSS, and rainbow 6.

My budget is capped at 1k. I could go up a little more but I don't want to (spending less than 1k means a potential SSD upgrade or another toy with the difference).

After reading a bunch of threads here, people seem to like eyefinity, but I don't want to get 3 "bad" monitors just to get this feature that I may or may not use. So I'm thinking of either: 2 Asus VG236H without the 3d and a new sapphire radeon 6950 2GB for a total of 349*2+262 =960.

or two HPZR24w and not upgrade my video card for 399*2 = 798.

The third route is to get two (or three?) Hanns-G HZ281HPB and a new card for 1129 (if i got 3).

The final route (and the one I'm considering most) is to get the HP ZR24w and a new card for 399+262 =661 and then hooking up my two NECs as 2nd and third monitors.

1900x1200 is very attractive for me since I also use it (mostly) for work.

Thanks for your advice!

Hey Alex, thanks for the advice but not too crazy about getting a SSD. I'm pretty happy with my HD setup (I have a 1TB storage drive too). Booting up windows in 1/2 the time or loading games in 1/2 the time doesn't really matter to me.

So that said, I guess I'll look at the U2410 and a radeon 6950. Thanks for any additional tips!

You could check local CL and find a used 3007wfp-hc or a zr30w for around $650 usually. Then use the rest for a GPU.

30 inches of goodness ftw.

It uses the same panel as the U2711, but doesn't have the connectivity features or the build quality of the Dell.

definitely a gpu upgrade and a aftermarket cooler to OC that cpu a bit. What's the native of your current monitor?
A new GPU is probably the way to go. Get a nice one like a 6970, 6950, 570, or a 580. Maybe a new case would help too but it depends on what you got already.
