1090T: Will the CPU die if it overheats or just shut down? - Page 2

I've just played a little Crysis Warhead and when I switched to the desktop for a moment the core temperature was up to 41/42°C.

What if the CPU overheats? Will it die, and maybe take the motherboard along, or will it just shut down or reboot the PC?

When I failed the stress tests at 4 Ghz with Prime95 or a benchmark, the PC just rebooted when the temperature was too high. If I recollect correctly that was at around 60°C.

So, do I have to worry to kill my CPU right away or does it just shorten its life span if it overheats and has to shut down rather frequently?

Your CPU will catch fire, burn the motherboard, cause a short, PC in flames and in turn burn down your house. Sorry bud =/ ......

Its a 43.20$ difference on amazon, that's almost twice as much.

Is it really that much better than the Scythe Mugen 2?

Right... @GenTarkin

I doubt its justified... Plenty of people suggest the Scythe Mugen 2 so I assume it's pretty good.

The Noctua is kinda like the Mercedes Benz of coolers.

Well, but on the other hand it's not that expensive if I use it for the next 2-4 years or so. My last grocery bill was higher.

Again, it's twice as expensive, but nowhere near twice as good. If you add another fan to the Scythe Mugen 2, it's gonna be within 1C or 2C of the Noctua. Also, the Mugen 2's stock fan is quieter than the Noctua's. If you MUST have the best air cooler, then of course get the Noctua. If you're looking for bang for buck, get the Scythe Mugen 2.

IIRC, the Noctua comes with 2 fans. So factor in the price of a high end, silent fan for the Scythe, you're not that far off. Like I mentioned, they also come with connectors to force a lower RPM and mounting brackets for both platforms and yeah. They're just well equipped.
