Stupid question, but what settings?

Thread Starter
Well I'm new to PC gaming, coming from consoles. My PC stats are below, but im confused as to what settings. Im playing in 1080p, and... well take L4D for example. Ive tried with all settings on high, and 8x anti aliasing and 16x filtering and triple buffering, and am running at 60fps stable, but im noticing small amounts of what I believe is input lag. This disappears at lower settings where I can get 210fps stable, but I figure 60fps would be all I need. So I guess im asking, for shooters (and other games) what FPS should I set my settings to reach? Is 60 fine and im just being picky or is there more to it?

Looks like you're using a TV as a monitor, so input lag should be noticable all the time (unless the TV has a thru mode, but I don't think sony TVs do).

Other than that, the only game setting that causes input lag is frame buffering, which is what vsync does. Rendering anything over the refresh rate of your video output is generally pointless, but it's sometimes advantageous to render more in online fps due to more refresh packets being sent or received.

Im not to keen with this all. Would the "Game Mode" I have be equivalent to thru mode?
edit: Does that also mean 60 FPS is what ill want to be at in any give game? My refresh rate is 60mhz or 60fps with game mode on, 120 otherwise. I assume Ill want game mode on

Why would I turn off V'sync? Would that cause lag?

That would actually cause the exact opposite. VSync forces the game to run at your monitors native refresh rate. If you turn it off, it just runs at the top speed your system can achieve.

So with VSync on it will run at 60FPS, but with it off it will run at a higher FPS. Though the beware that you can notice some screen tear with it turned off. What I would look into if you see screen tear, is some sort of software that forces the game to run at a frame rate albeit more than 60FPS (like 70 or so). Than you
