Single gtx 480 OC vs 5870 crossfire OC vs 6950 2GB

Thread Starter
Hello, which of these options would be a better investment?

Gtx 480 OCd (lets say 880-900mhz)

vs

5870 crossfire OC (I dont know how high these can OC)

6950 2gb (OCed and unlocked)

What would be a better investment for gaming?
Also,, is the 6870/50 better than the 5870?

For me , the xfire 5870s give the best performance, but I am not sure how an OCd 480 could hold up. I am also scared of crossfiring as I have heard there can be a lot of problems.

Power consumption, noise and heat are not a factor for me.

6870 is better with DX11 because of more tesselation cores than a single 5870, but Xfire 5870's will destroy a single 6870.

Can't say much for a gtx 480, I do know that they are power hungry though.

5870CF will be your fastest performance option, but it's also most expensive.
Just get a 6950 2gb that can unlock to 6970 shader.
With your resolution 1920 x 1080, you'll be fine with 1gb vram card though.

6870cf beat 5870cf

im using sli 480's at 950mhz core and they rock

looking at your psu 650w i would get the 6870's as they use much much less power than the others

Personally i would go with the 6950 2gb. Yes crossfired 5870's will give you more raw fps but the simplicity of having one card and getting good performance as well would swing it for me. The only reason I went crossfire is because second hand 5850's were so cheap and I couldnt justify selling a 5850 cheap to upgrade to a 6950.

@masonkian they dont actually. Those two set ups would perform roughly the same.

What about in terms of overclocking?

The most powerfull single gpu solution seems to be the 480, but I cant find a direct comparison of the cards OCd.

all the card you mentioned are good overclocker in general, but every cards OC differently. My 5870 was able to overclock 1000mhz core with air. My gtx 480 wasn't good overclock though.

Since Ive owned all cards in question there, go with the 6950 and unlock. Its a beast, when you need more power just buy another for crossfire.

Some ppl doesn't like going SLI/CF because of micro shuttering and you have to play games in full screen mode for SLI/CF to work.
I personally didn't experience any micro shuttering with SLI/CF.
5870 OC avg? Not sure about avg. Every cards are different, but 5870 reference models are better overclocker with voltage control.
