1.5 year old 5870 Artifacting/Overheating/Dying?

Edit: Please stop sending me ridiculously low offers for my card via private messages "In case I can't get it fixed". I have received three so far. I'm not planning to sell the card whatever happens, and I'm most certainly not willing to sell a working 5870 GPU for $20 or $50. Games still run perfectly fine and it's still very much a usable card. Thanks for understanding.

So, this is my story

I got my awesome 5870 in January last year, and so far it's been an amazing card, except for a fan rattle that happened once every 3 months or so, and then I had to touch the fan and it would go away.

The last time I checked for temperatures was a long time ago, and they were normal. It was idling at about 45C and load was about 70C max.

and just recently I ran some programs that used 100% GPU power.
Opened up CCC, went to Ati Overdrive to see my temp, and saw that the card was rapidly gaining temperature and got up to a whopping 92C.

I immediately turned off that stress test, turned up the fan to 100%, cooled it back to about 70C, and now I see that it idles at 70C, 68 at best.

I took it out, got an air spray can, and cleaned out a moderate amount of dust. No effect. And now, about 2-3 weeks later, I see these artifacts.
Attachment 210908

They appear randomly and the checkerboard pattern is giving me hints that it's all over soon.

Games run normally though.

The warranty from Diamond is long gone (only one year) and I've been using the 10.10 driver version since it came out, and it's been perfectly stable. New releases make my monitors blink like crazy when at 2D clocks.

So, any thoughts? Why is it idling at 70C? Is it dying? I really don't want to take the stock heatsink off because I've never done it and I'm somewhat scared.

My ambient temp is 30C on average, I live in CA, it's pretty hot here.

I'm going to go ahead and reboot, I don't know why..

buy it from you for 20$? Do you have any OC on it, if so return it to stock settings and are the drivers all updated?

No overclock, stock settings.

reapply thermal paste? reformat computer.....the list could go on and on!

Well, since the warranty is gone, I'd consider taking it apart, applying new TIM and give the cooler a proper clean up.
When all that is done, try some different drivers. If its still doing it, the card might be dying after all...

Don't be scared, pull that heatsink off, just be sure you read up on it first and take your time. Put some new TIM on there and see what happens. There's no warranty to worry about. Also, take a system image so you can roll back and try the latest driver. Maybe you wont get screen flashes.

If cleaning and reapplying TIM doesn't work bake the card.

385 for 8min and the card should be good to go. There is a great guide on here somewhere.

Funny thing is, that since Im still waiting on a RMA'd card on sig, a friend of mine lended me a ATI 4870x2 card he had no use for it and thats the card I'm using right now, this little beast Idles at 90*c (looking at CCC) I was W-T-F is going on here ! 0% usage, fan does work and I had to set the fan to 100% speed in manual mode to get it down to 50*c at idle 0% load.

So from I read here, its recommended to apply new TIM ? is the same TIM used for processors as for Videocards? I have some new from this build.

Yea, can somebody tell me if I can use the same TIM I used on my CPU?

And also, can I get an aftermarket cooler at Frys or Microcenter? Don't wanna order it on the internet.

Yeah, TIM is usable for CPUs and GPUs. Pretty much anywhere you need help in heat transfer.
