I don't even have money for a new GPU right now, and I'm very upset.
I have about $140, and it's not going to get me anywhere even close to what I have right now.

Idling at 64C @30C ambient ATM.

As for the idling at high temps I have two thoughts:

1. Is it really idling? Check with GPU-Z, CCC or similar. There is an bug with some drivers and programs causing 100% GPU usage when in the desktop. I had an issues with my 5850, 11.3 drivers and Firefox 4.0; after watching any flash based video it would go to 100% on the GPU and stay there, only a restart or sleep-wake cycle would reset it. Disabling hardware acceleration in FF fixed it.

2. Have a good clean of the heat sink. A quick blast with air is good, but not as good as tearing that thing down and scrubbing the dust out.

If you still have problems after these two steps, time to re-think

Artifacting just appeared today, I've been using 10.10 for the last few months, and any later driver makes my screen glitch unless I locked it at 3D clocks 24/7.

My original 5870 is also a launch era Diamond card, I didnt realize it was doing so poorly tempature-wise until I installed my 2nd 5870 (Non-Reference XFX). I'll probably have to replace the TIM on it soon but to help the situation short term, I added an intake fan to my side panel and manually control the fan speed with MSI afterburner profiles. I never had artifacting, but some random lockups while gaming went away after that.

Save that $140, don't buy after market cooler yet. Re-apply the TIM and clean out the heatsink, if that doesn't do then you're card is actually dying and there's nothing you can do about it. Plus if you wait a couple months you can get a new 6950 for around $180 their prices are dropping

I think I'm going to download FurMark, and see what happens there, I will set the fan to 100% and see if it artifacts there. Maybe something happened and it's firefox only?

So from I read here, its recommended to apply new TIM ? is the same TIM used for processors as for Videocards? I have some new from this build.
I have a borrowed 4870 X2 that I was using at well. It idled in the 80s also. The fan would max at 50%, but would keep the card under 100 at load. However, it was artifacting.

I will do some major testing and see what's really happening, because there are no artifacts in games or any other application besides firefox whatsoever.. I think I'm just overreacting and a TIM replacement would be fine.
