[Work Log] Custom Copper - Page 6

LOL U should have called me and I would have brought the CAT out and drug them out for ya. That thing moves bails like lightning unless they are the wet ones we had yesterday. The CAT has a 3k lb tipping weight and I thought I was a had lad a couple times with that thing going over face first... fortunately the bail i was toting caught me before I went over too far.
If you can get it for cheap, I would be down for it. Do they make it wider than 2X6? that is as big as i have ever seen it... not that it would be hard to just make a pannel out of a few of them and a backing strip to tie them together... might even look good that way, who knows. I am so deep into this build (as far as cost) that a few $ more on a case wont make any difference. I am still trying to think of the best way to pad the sides though. I am stuck betweeen layering foam rubber to fill the box and then cutting a hole through the layers to fit the case or if i want to fill it with that spray foam insulation in a can then cut the hole... what do you think? Spray will prob be cheaper but I think the foam rubber will be easier. I expect the protection to be about the same.

Foam rubber then we can get massive amounts of foam from thefoamfactory.com. To add more cushion. I have to measure my truck bed first to see how deep it can be. I think only 23 inches. I was thinking what you were with the 2x6s. Never know, they might even come in huge plywood type sheets that are thick.

Subbed.

How are you going to avoid shorting with bare wiring?

How tall is your case at the shortest side? I am pretty sure they make those boards in a 1 inch thick version so that your bottom and top can not take up so much hight... for that matter there is really no reason not to use the 1 inch all over... its prob cheaper. Shop around for some hinge hardware and some sort of latch device to keep it closed. I got all the tools to do the build here.

the wire is not bare, it has a polyester resin insulation on it so shorting will not be a problem. Here is the link for where i got it.

15.7" Wide x 20.4" Deep x 29" Tall (+1" for the feet). So if I lay it on it's side it'll have no problem fitting.

scratch using the composite decking idea. It's $29 for a 5.5x16ft section of it, so we'd be looking at $150 boxes

LOL looks like there is goinng to be some sexy plywood in our future. I am going out this afternoon so I will stop in and see what i can find. I may also be able to get the foam rubber localy. There is a place here that used to stock tons of it all the time. I will check in on that 2. I think it used to be like $25 for a sheet the size of a queen mattress but that was many years ago.
The lovely UPS lady brought me a present today :-) my wire mesh came!! It is every bit as good looking as I thought it would be. Really busy during the days so I never have time to upload photos but I will have them tonight.

Had a great day for parts! Wire mesh came in early this afternoon and I got some epoxy to mount it with.

I went out shopping today at Lowes for materials to build a carying box for my case to protect it when I go to LANs and such. I really wanted to use foam rubber as a padding material but nowhere in town keeps it in stock so i opted for a 3/4 inch thick foam insulation that is frequently used on the sides of houses. I plan to cut it into strips at least an inch wide and stack the strips inside the case sides. Not the perfect solution but it will work for now. When I find something better I can replace it. I also got plywood and some 1x1.5 to reinforce. The structural strength will be maintained by screws from the inside however I found some copper gutter nails that I will be using on the outside as a decoration. When it is all put together (minus the nails and foam) I will spray it black then add black hardware and throw in the copper nails :-) I think it will be pretty cool... if not... who cares, it is just a box.
