940 Overclock Noob Help

Hey guys, Yes I'm an OC noob and don't know much about anything.

I got an old 940 that I'm looking to OC. I think it's about time since all the new stuff is out and I'm looking to squeeze this setup till it dies to stave off an upgrade to ddr3 and newer board/cpu.

So what do I need to look for and what would be a good setting to set this too? I don't know much about oc'ing again so you guys might have to hold my hand through this lol.

BTW, It's the system rig in the sig. 940 with Thermaltake spin q cooler, 8Gigs of DDR2 Gskills, a K9A2 Plat Mobo, and an old Toaster 4870.

btw got some new case fans comeing in that should really drop the temps inside the case and help suck out all the hot air and put in semi-cold air lol.

Well your overclocking capability really depends on your chipset. If you have a chipset you can overclock pretty good. You seem to have a pretty good one. You can probably squeeze out a good 200 MHz out of the one you have, but I'd expiriment with it because processors are never the same. Once you find what you can do on stock voltages, up the voltages by small steps. You can squeeze more and more until you hit a wall, and when you do, you're just going to have to deal with what you got. It's all trial and error though. Can't do that much harm unless you up the VCore to like 1.6 or something ridiculous like that.

I used to have my 940 running at 3.8 GHz with a 1.5v vcore. I miss that chip

It gave up the ghost. Things started to get really slow and eventually unstable. I lowered the clock to add some stability, but it kept getting worse and eventually I wound up at stock. Then, it just wouldn't boot one day. Had a good 2 year run out of it, though. I pushed it pretty damned hard.

Raise your FSB to give the processor 100MHz increases in speed (you can figure this out by: goal total cpu speed [example: 3000] in MHz divided by cpu multiplier [example: 19x] = FSB), and test with Prime95 for 10 minutes while monitoring cpu core temperatures, personally I use HWMonitor. Keep doing this until it is no longer stable. Then, use your last Prime95 10 minute stable settings and test that 8 hours for ensured stability at stock voltages. If you want to go further, let us know what settings and temps you have so we can take it from there with voltage tweaking, multiplier tweaking (if your cpu is a Black Edition), and memory tweaking.

Okay well I did a little overclocking. Got an okay clock on it. Was hoping to go higher but this one is the first one that was stable.

Core Idle Temp: 43-44C
Core Temp at Stress: 56C
Stability Test Passed for 6 hours.
940 O'Clocked to: 3465.35

Core Multi: 16.50x
NB Speed: 1890.12 Mhz
HyperT. Link: 1890.15 Mhz
HT. Ref. Clock 210.02 Mhz
Memory Freq.: 840 Mhz
V-Core: 1.472 Volts (I think, Can't remember)

What you guys think???
