its dolby and yes onboards do have it. But what onboards dont have is a dolby amp. Thats what the difference and be able to simmulate 5.1 on stereo. Headsets themselves do not specifically support Dolby Headphone technology, it is their amplifier that does this processing.
and about the card i would say that no on-board (even the 892) can be as good as a dedicated card , i do have the 889 (just small step behind the 892 and its very rubbish especially when using headsets
so i recommend you one of those three card
1 Xonar DG for low budget ,amazing card for the money but its PCI
2 Xonar DX incase you are interested in movies/music even in gaming it will perform great (i will go fot that one)
3-SB x-fi titanium if you do game alot this one is the right deal but people say it has unstable drivers
frankly i think a 100$ sound card is the best option (price to performance)
