What size for SSD boot drive?

Thread Starter
I'm on a budget so I'm considering getting an SSD boot drive. I've heard it's one of the biggest performance enhancements you can do.

What is an appropriate size for an SSD drive and a couple small applications (word, eclipse, chrome, etc.)

Thanks!

64GB is the most optimal for the boot drive. Will even have some extra space in case you want to install a game or two. I personally have Crucial C300 64GB. Very happy. There is newer version of it called m4 which is same price.

I have a 120gig drive and I don't even use a quarter of that for windows items. I have a few Steam games and CS4 loaded on it and I'm at about half capacity. So it just depends on what you are going to load on it. Since you are not going to be loading a bunch of stuff anything around 60gigs will be plenty. There are some people that us smaller ones, but then you are going to have to really manage your files much more carefully.

The 64GB ones are more then enough for use as OS drives.

I've even partitioned mine. I have 40GB for my windows 7 installation along with all the small programs i use (Chrome, CCleaner, GIMP 2, Adobe Reader, etc) and I've barely reached 20GB's

The other 20GB partition I'm thinking of using for dual booting Ubuntu.

Just make sure you use it only for the OS, programs and a game or two and you don't have to worry much about space.

Put everything else on a HDD.

30GB is the bare minimum.
60-GB is the minimum recommended.

I have a 40gb for windows, office and firefox. i have about 6gb left over. If you plan on adding other applications that benefit from SSDs like Photoshop or a few games, get a bigger one.

To be honest though, it only helps in general computing (like things you would do on your desktop) and is pretty expensive to get even a budget-minded recommendable SSD, so if you are looking for the most bang for your buck in a gaming computer, don't get one. Because it doesn't really help in gaming, so you could spend that extra $100-150 that it would cost on your GPU.

I personally would not go below 150GB for a boot drive. I've already decided that I need 250GB for my next boot drive to cover all of my programs and OS...

60GB is more than enough. I've had major buyer's remorse buying a 120GB one.

well im poor so i got a 32gb corsair. with win7 ,browsers and a few other things compressed i only use half... had my most played fps on their for a while but decided to take it off as it was writing too much for my liking,

its all up to what you want to put on it.
if you only want it for boot/browser then go cheap and get the 32gb. if ya have extra cash later on or want more then get another for raid 0 i wouldl say.
