The Sager actually worked out more expensive than the alienware with similar specs (and this was with an alienware case included in the price, as well as some extra features).

I've only seen but positive reviews about the m14x, and the build quality as actually getting much better.

Quite honestly, I'm torn between an G53JW-XN1, and the m14x. They both have optimus, except the alienware uses sandy bridge, and the G53JW-XN1 doesn't :/.
I'd say the Sager NP5165 is better than both, overall. The ASUS G53 is too bulky and the M14X is too expensive for what you get.

A random note:

M17x R3 (GTX460m, 60Hz screen option) has Optimus. Only about 3.5 hours of actual (web surfing and office apps) battery life in IGP mode, however.

Probably because of the 17" screen. Anyway, there's not much point in getting decent battery life when you have to lug around a 10 pound laptop.

I might go with the m14x though. Looks on a laptop are also one thing I don't mind paying a bit extra for :3

Dell's products are also cheaper for me as well, because I live in Canada.

Looks? You think that thing looks good? Well, who am I to judge. I personally feel like throwing up every time I see the front of one. It's still a better choice than the G53.

Yeah, haha, it's hit and miss right?

I personally don't really care for the ordinary type looks of laptops.

The rice of the Alienware appeals to me lol.

+1 more for desktop / netbook combo -- I built my machine for the desktop purpose, and I plan on getting an 11" Macbook Air (Apple's touchpads are the best, imo. Close second would be Thinkpad's trackpoint).

The Alienware laptops are good.

One model to consider - the Sony Vaio SB series. I have one and love it - it's perfect for taking notes in class and also for gaming in the evening. Heck, I even sold my desktop because I didn't really have a use for it anymore.

Sandy Bridge CPU, up to a Radeon HD 6630m 1 GB graphics card with a hardware switch that enables you to run on the IGP when you're on the go, 13.3" screen (same form factor as a MacBook Pro 13"), and a ridiculously long-lived battery in power saver mode (I can get 7+ hours out of the battery if I browse lightly and do productivity work).
