Mechanical cherry Mx Blue

Thread Starter
Ok guys I know there are a MILLION keyboard threads out there but I would like some specific help.
(also its kind of long so I bolded the main issues)

1) I am a poor college student so cost is a HUGE issue.
2) cost = if im going to have to buy a new one every 2 weeks a $200 dollar keyboard is cheaper than a $50 keyboard. Reliability is also a big issue.

Ok so now that we got that out of the way. I am looking to buy a mechanical keyboard. *my first one ><*
I REALLY like the sounds of the Cherry MX blue so that would be my first choice for switches. I have been getting mixed reviews between what is better like Boxer uses blues to train but some people say for double tapping blues arent the greatest but blacks are?

I <3 the click click sound so that would be a HUGE plus.

I live in Hawaii so before you mention deals on shipping and what not be sure to note that almost no free shipping exists to Hawaii *aside from amazon* So finding a board on there would be best then i can spend a little more.
What im looking at now
Razer Black widow. The good thing about this is that it is cheap. It is 70 dollars flat cause on amazon no shipping no tax. im not getting the ultimate cause my CPU is right next to my desk so i dont need the extra ports or the CON. The quality is pretty iffy? a lot of reviews saying good things but on forums they say that sometimes arrives DOA or with TERRIBAD glitches such as keys sticking and clicking more than one key. Or keys being switched. But the ones that arrive okay seem to last? again mixed reviews....
Das Keyboard Ultimate GOOD it seems to have a better track record also loving the blank keys. but it is 130 base AND is around 26 shippin+tax. BUT i hear there is a student discount so it is like free shipping.

So is the DAS keyboard worth the extra 60 dollars? or do you know of any other keyboards that are in the <$130 with shipping price range that are good and reliable?
Also im probably gonna wait till like august to pick it up but i wanna start shopping now so i can save accordingly so if you know anything coming out that i should try check out LMK.
Also I am thinking of going into a theology major and I do accounting stuff so a 10 key pad would be nice and this is for typing as well as gaming (mainly sc2)

Thanks

I have a Black Widow and it is amazing. That being said I received one with a key that would like the stick. After a few back and forth emails insuring it was hardware related they replaced it. Since then, a few months everything has been fine. The only thing I could honestly say bad about it is the white coloring in some of the letters is faded due to use, but even that doesn't bother me. For 70 dollars it has been a great first step into mechanical keyboards for me, and I wouldn't turn back now.

if you can source a cheap model m (ebay or some local flea market usually), they are practically indestructible.

I'd advise staying away from Razer, I got the Black Widow Ultimate (also my first mechanical) and the space bar collides with either or both of the alt keys (causes the space bar to not register) im sending mine back and I only had it out of the box for an hour. Some people have problems with Razer and others dont I would just stay away to avoid the hassle really.

For gaming i'd say go for brown or black switches, but if you like the click click sound, go for blues I personally couldnt hear it over my four mates. Im probably going to grab a DAS, Steelseries or Filico when im refunded.

One of the major advantages of getting a board with mx switches if for the reliability. Why the hell would you buy a razer? They surrounded very reliable switches with other very unreliable parts which kinda defeats the whole purpose.

You usually get what you pay for. You do the math...

i recommend the Das Keyboard. its got the MX blues you want, and i dont know why people hate it for gaming, i game with the blues and its pretty awesome. theyre also amazing typist switches as well.

and, mechanical switches are indeed indestructible, but they are allergic to liquid..as my first das keyboard found out.

The Das student discount gives you 20% off a new product + free shipping or 15% off a refurb one + free shipping. I used the student discount and bought a refurb Ultimate S Silent(Brown switches + blank keys) for $94 SHIPPED. A new board was around $103 shipped. The refurb I received looks and feels brand new. It also came with the original box and everything.
