Is DVI as good as HDMI ?

Thread Starter
Hi I just wanted to ask a question about HDMI and DVI connections. I am looking in to buying a new Full HD monitor roughly 22"-24" and have been doing a little research and it seems some monitors without HDMI connectors are slightly cheaper I am on a tight budget.

So my question is is the DVI connection just as good as HDMI for gaming. I have done some research on the net and read that DVI is the same format as HDMI but doesn't carry sound I use external speakers anyway. And from what I see the DVI can output very high resolutions. I just wanted to confirm from people using these two outputs if there is any image quality difference over the two.

My graphics has both outputs and I'm using HDMI on my crappy 16" HD ready TV at the moment. The only HDMI device I use is an XBOX 360 and I know you can get HDMI to DVI cables so that isn't too much of an issue unless you loose image quality. I also would like to know if I'd need a dual link DVI cable and what is the difference other than pin connectors ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated smile.gif

Thanks Chris:)

In short, yes. HDMI and DVI are both digital connections and are equal.

ASUS makes a great monitor. For $150 USD or so I got a 21.5" LED back-lit monitor with VGA/DVI/HDMI outputs. the 24" is under $200 bucks with all 3 connections as well.

Search newegg for the ASUS monitors. Both of mine are perfect no dead pixels and doing me just fine.

Picture quality wise, their both identical. The only real difference is that HDMI carries the audio signal as well as video. Picture quality between the two is identical.

Yes I agree the ASUS Monitors do look fantastic they are a great manufacturer. Unfortunately Im from the UK so I can't use newegg even though they have amazing prices compared to the UK. For example your model is the equivalent to $ 222 and is £136 in the uk and that is the cheapest price ! ouch frown.gif

Thanks for the input guys I'll try to get a monitor with all three inputs if I can smile.gif
