GTX590
- You all know.

HD6990
- First thing first, this is a supreme card over all, great overclocker ect..
- Runs LOUD, this really isn't a reason to call this a failure but unless you get a great after market cooler or watercool it, it is way to loud imo.

If I was to get new card today I would get

Single card
- GTX580
- HD6950 and unlock it. I'm using 60Hz monitor so this would do the job for every game I play, GTX580 would be slightly more future proof.

SLI/CF
- GTX560
- HD6950 and unlock them.

But in the end I would always get ATI (yeah I still call them ATI and always will), in my opinion they have improved so much more over the past year and been at much better price/performance.

Hopefully I'm not offending anyone, but in the end this is just my opinion.
If you let me the expression,

WHO ON EARTH WOULD SPEND $750 ON A GPU AND USE THE STOCK COOLER.

That doesn't fit in my head, sorry.

It goes for both the asplodin' GTX590 and the loud as heck HD6990.

Enthusiast grade cards requiere enthusiast grade environments. Call it water, call it Accelero Xtreme Twin Turbo, or call it Farting on the Core.

What matters here is performance. Of course cards going almost out of PCIe certification are loud dude, there's a two slot cooler trying to dissipate 375W of heat!! That's like trying to cool a nuclear reactor with a car radiator. It's GOING to be hot.

I'd only get a GTX580 if I had money to blow on something useless (in my situation), and I'd get the 3GB version.

It retails at €400+ in Spain, whereas the HD6950 2GB (UNLOCKABLE PCB by Sapphire) retails at under €240.

It's being stupid to get an nVIDIA card here in Spain, and in Europe generally. They cost twice as the comparable AMD card. Hell, you get a HD6950 2GB crossfire for the price of a decent GTX580 (Lightning/TFIII/DCII)

unfortunately that is not the case. My bet is that there are more noobs that buy these cards than enthusiasts. I remember reading about a guy with a 6990 and an E8400. Who bought the 6990 to get better performance in CoD. Alot of buyers of these products we do not hear about, because they do not visit forums. They just look at benchmarks and make their mind up

Cleaned.
Quit Derailing the thread! This is about the 590 not the 6950 or the 6970.Stay on topic!

the drivers didn't kill them, the fact that the power phases and vrms SUCKED killed them.

it was like putting $5 tires on a drag racing car, sure, itll run with em on it, but they'll probably pop at the starting line.

This is very very wrong.

Even with the "cheap power phases and vrms" that you claim this card has, it would be able to reach 1.05v which, would push 90% of these cards above 800mhz...Now it wouldn't be perfect but, that's far from dead.

The problem is that this card IS locked by drivers and IS locked in it's bios, nothing more, nothing less...So any potential at all being limited, is currently software limited...

And no, even more mis-information with the popping...They will and do not pop anymore...If you're dumb enough to go over 1.2v like MOST of the samplers did, you're on your own.

Sometimes you gotta love the amount of mis-information on this board...

im not claiming it has anything, i believe it has 4+1 power phasing, while the 6990 has i think 6+2. nvidia dropped the ball on this one.

You got proof they don't run as originally designed or are you just a troll??

Because they do in fact run just fine at stock speeds and the comment made by the nvidia rep is in fact true....

I will absolutely agree that the card COULD be much better...There's 100% no argument from me, Nvidia cheaped out BUT, the card itself, is far from dead and well worth the $$$ IF software limitations could be removed.

Right now, at stock, I will mostly agree, I feel "we" got jipped...I support that 100% BUT, one thing you and the community need to realize is...The card is locked BECAUSE of samplers/initial users overvolting...This is a problem the 590 COMMUNITY created and Nvidia responded...WE blew up our cards, they swooped in on a white horse and said HELLLLLL NOOOOOOO...YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!

We are victims of our own stupidity...and as such, the card is locked.

If it could be unlocked...This card is WELL worth the 700$+...850mhz on .97v is possible, I proved that on release day...

This card has a butt-load of potential but, it's being limited 100% by software not the VRM's or the power phases...Software.
