4870 fan dying?

Thread Starter
Hello,

my GPUs fan (I assume) is doing some weird noises. I have to keep the fan speed from CCC @ lowest or otherwise it starts squealing. The faster the fan is spinning the harder it squeals. And if I set it over 70% speed it sounds like it will break. The strange things however are:
1) The squealing starts after the computer has loaded desktop. At the same time CCC starts.
2) If the computer is laying on it's side it doesn't make this noise.

I have cleaned the fan from dust and temps are 45-65°C

Thanks

Hi,

The fan might just not be secured in place. Happen with time.

Here is a fix :

Take your card out of your case.
Hold it with your hards and push on the fan with your thumbs.
You should hear a "click".

If there is no "clicking" sound your fan may be dying.

Hope that helps.

Regards

I did and actually it feels a little bit loose/detached but there's no click sound.. You can press the fan from the middle but it just bounds back up.

I meant to push really hard on it.

If it doesn't do the trick, then you've got to live with it or te replace it.
All red ATI fans are alike and you should be able to find a cheap one.

You sure its your fan? If so, its probably had enough. If you think about it, its always fighting against gravity isn't it whilst your computer is standing up rather than on its side.

Do you have a Diamond card? Out of 3 people (me and two friends) who owned Diamond 48XX cards, the damn fans on them wore out. They'd make odd sounds, stop, then suddenly rev up again, over and over and over.... Diamond sucks.

How can I make sure it's the fan and not just some other part of GPU?
