Optimizing my PC

Thread Starter
Well, when I built my first (and previous) computer, I just kind of, built it. Installed drivers. And used it.
Now Ive spent a great deal of money on my second build, and great deal of time building it and making use of cable management, and quite a bit of time getting a decent overclock (resistant processor even at 4.5) and making sure its stable. I want to treat this one well. What programs should I have to make sure all is well? Im currently using NOVA Backup, and I still need a registry cleaner and defrag. Does the windows defrag do its job fine, or should I purchase third party software? Same with the registry cleaner? Also, If it use the windows defrag, should I run it in safe mode or close explorer?
TL;DR Whats the best/recommended defrag, registry cleaner, and what other programs to enhance performance?

Windows defrag is fine, I would be careful witth registry cleaners.

Would be a good idea to geth some kind of hardware monitor like hwmonitor or aida64. I like aida a lot it has a lot of features.

CCleaner is a really good freeware cleaner for registry and temp files.

Windows defrag will get the job done well, you don't really need to purchase a 3rd party application. Some may disagree but, it's really not as important with WIndows 7 as with previous versions of Windows.

There aren't really programs out there that will enhance performance per se, just make sure you don't have a bunch of applications running in startup. The best way to do that is to open up regedit go to Edit>Find> then check off Keys and match whole string only and type "run". This will bring you to every key that has programs running at startup and just delete the keys for the things you dont want to be running in the background, hitting f3 inbetween each one will bring you to the next, its pretty straight forward.

You could also disable services that you aren't using in services.msc by typing that in the run command box. Windows key + R. Besides that there is no tangible way to increase performance without a hardware upgrade and you're system is already very fast, so no worries bro.

a co-worker of mine recommended CCleaner as a more extensive disk cleanup/registry cleaner and it has worked well for me so far.

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

as for antivirus and such, i currently use Malware Bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

all are free, take up relatively little space and run much cleaner/faster than the big name anti-virus solutions like Norton

I use CCleaner and ASC4.

Always used both of em (earlier version of ASC) and never had problems.

I've used CCleaner and have heard good things about Glary Utilities as well. I used it but didn't like the interface as much as CC. What about COMODO? So far I've used all three and can't really recommend one over the other. COMODO does auto-backup your files before cleaning, so that might be a bonus.

For antivirus, I use Spybot and Malwarebytes and have never had issues keeping a clean system. I also liked Avira, if you want a good all-purpose scanner.

CCleaner- cleans out everything from a single interface. I'd avoid the registry cleaning functions though.

Diskeeper 2011 for defrags- best defragger around IMHO.

Avira Free edition for anti-virus. I found this to be better than MSE.

Malwarebytes anti-malware free version.

For hardware monitoring, I just use MSI afterburner for the GPU (displaying on my G15's lcd panel), and leave the CPU alone since I haven't O/ced anything and it's got a Noctua U12P on it anyway.
