Ny New Rig. Seeking Suggestions!

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

So, hokay! I'm building my first gaming computer and I'm pretty new to this. I've been searching around several forums and blogs the last couple weeks in effort to locate the best parts for the computer I plan to build. After weeks of research I've decided to join this forum since most of my queries reference me to answers located on this forum

My budget is going to be around 1000$ and will have to include everything necessary to run this rig. I intend to do some heavy gaming and perhaps learn to overclock my pc if necessary (which I will have to to additional research on in the near future )

My recent research has led me to the following parts which I intend to use unless one of you pro's can convince me otherwise:

CPU:
Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Unlocked Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Sandy Bridge 6MB - $220.25

Motherboard:
ASUS P8P67 Pro REV3.0 ATX P67 LGA1155 DDR3 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 2PCI Sandy Bridge B3 Motherboard - $175.24

GPU
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570 OC Fermi 780MHZ 1.28GB 3.8GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI Mini HDMI PCI-E DX11 Video Card - $347.49

Case
Coolermaster Storm Scout Black ATX Tower Case 5X5.25 5X3.5INT 120MM & 140MM Red LED Fan No PSU - $92.00

PSU
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W ATX 20/24PIN SLI Ready Modular Cables 135mm Fan 80PLUS Power Supply - $75.94

Memory
G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-10666CL9D-8GBXL 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 Memory - $75.81

CPU Cooler
Zalman CNPS9500 AT Heatsink 92MM Fan LGA1156 1155 1366 775 1300-2650RPM 18-27.5DBA - $36.53

HDD
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive Oem - $65.23

And that's it. Also, I have a couple questions which I could not find an answer for. Perhap's someone can help me:

1) If I am using a dedicated graphic's card, is it necessary to get the CPU cooler I have listed? As I understand, the CPU will get super hot if being used to run the graphics during gaming. Could I not just use the default cooler that comes bundled with the CPU instead?

2) Is the graphics card I selected worth the price? I was thinking of maybe getting the GTX 560 and save like 100 bucks instead.

3) Will my computer be 'bottlenecked'? I've read alot of people talking about this and am not really sure what it means.

Let me know what you guys think about my decisions; again, I am completely new to this so any constructive criticism helps! Also, let me know if I am missing any important details that might be beneficial during construction of this rig.

Thanks in advance!

Looks great to me. To me the 570 isn't worth retail price - I got mine for $190 as an open box deal. I would look at a 2GB 6950 first, but I believe they are hard to find at the moment. What resolution will you be playing at?

Ah, alright, where to start...

1) That's ridiculous. Sure, if you use the APU on these chips they might run hotter, but you still don't want to use the stock fan. Also, the HSF you picked out is garbage. If you want a great, cheap HSF, look at the Hyper 212+.

2) The 570 is a great card. Look for a nice non-reference design for that price, will help the OC.

3) No, not really. The thing slowing you down the most would be the single HDD. That's a good drive, though. If you don't have room in the budget for an SSD, I'd at least try to sneak a second 640GB in there for RAID 0. You will see huge improvements there. Also, get faster memory, but less of it. Do you actually need 8GB? If you're gaming and browsing, the answer is no, you don't. Get 4GB of at least 1600+ (helps with OC). Even better, get some modules with tighter timings, but that's when the price starts to go up a little.

You absolutely want a good CPU cooler. You will be overclocking that chip. (That's why you picked an unlocked one, right?) It will be a huge bump.

Also, I'm not positive about that PSU. I'm not too familiar with the OCZ stuff, so I can't speak too much on it. 700W is a bit overkill, though.

Ultimately, it would help more to know what your primary use will be for the machine. Also, what monitor are you using?

I'm going to play at the highest resolution possible with the card that does'nt significantly reduce gameplay performance. Also, I forgot to mention, I will likely be connecting the computer to my TV as being its monitor. It's an LG 32inch 1080p. I know that the tv allows only specific resolutions for it to operate.

I am also considering ditching the tv and going for a dual screen configuration. I havnt really decided. I'm going to be watching blue ray video's and whatnot through my computer also, which is why I am considering using my TV

Keep in mind playing on a TV that size does terrible things to your image quality.

I suggest a high-quality ~24" monitor.

Also, why did you post this build twice in this forum?

Yes, I knew the tv would reduce the image quality and perhaps in the near future I do want to change it to a set of 2 nice computer monitors. Right now though it's not in my budget so I am going to use what I have available.

The first time I pressed post, the page gave me an error. I refreshed and pressed post again! lol. I'll delete the other one. haha

Also, thanks for your suggestions, I'm looking into it now, I like the CPU cooler recommendation as it saves me money

You won't be able to delete it.

What you could do is report your own post and explain that you've mistakenly created two threads and would like them merged. I'm sure a kind moderator would be around to help you out.
